Vets Are Home And Homeless (Thanks GW)
Three years ago, when he returned from Iraq and a stint in the U.S. Army, Herold Noel thought he'd be treated as a hero. Instead, he faced a series of degradations, including learning he was ineligible for public-housing assistance.

That's when Noel went back to the red jeep that had become his home at night. That's when Noel- fueled by alcohol - took out a gun. That's when Noel fired the bullet intended to pierce his skull and kill himself instantly. Noel misfired, then passed out, When he woke up, he realized what had happen.

1. If God Had Meant Them to Have Homes
He'd a made them the children of rich folks.

Q.E.D.

On a serious not, Mr. Obama is talking about helping this homeless issue with his http://obamarama.org/2007/04/09/sen-obama-announces-homes-for-heroes-plan/">Homes For Heroes plan.

5. Why homes for heroes? Why not homes for everyone?

10. Let's Do That Too
But it's even more appalling - to me - that those who sacrificed for society should get the shaft.

11. I know. I've been thinking/obsessing about this since Monkeyman
posted a thread last Thursday.

We know what is going to happen. We can never claim that we didn't see it coming.

What are we up for?

14. I've been thinking and fussing, Monkeyman. It's like knowing
your kids are coming home and the frig is empty. :(

Who are orgs who interact with the VA as advocates for Vets? We need to get on this and I don't know a thing about it. Where do I start?

2.  We can say this should never have happened
and it certainly should not .

People sit by and hope that 2009 will be the year of change with all the talk about Obama or Hillary and others with grand promises and solutions for all .

What we have is a situation that should have never happened and a war that should have never been allowed .

Trouble is the vets and many many others can;t wait for 2009 for some hope of change and years to even then see some sort of help .

I become sick when i think that bush and all of the involved criminals as well as the politicians from both sides sit in the top of the world and have well beyond everything they need and so many others find life on the streets and no way out .

6. Somehow we have to organize in our own communities and
help returning vets or they.will.be.screwed.

20. That's a good idea. My 'hood is organized to reach out
to homeless people but I've never heard a word about vets. You'd think there would be a way to catch them when they first separate -- before things go so wrong. :(

3. How many more vets will we see maimed in body and spirit
in an endless procession until it is STOPPED? There are so many MORE reasons to stop now than to let it continue for 6 months & 6 months & 6 months...

21. I was homeless for a year and a quarter. I'm not a vet. I nearly died.
All because of a shortage of public housing.

Is my life less important?

Over and over, Sapphire Blue has posted requests to write and call about more low-income housing, with very few responses.

Now, however, because it's about vets, it suddenly becomes more important, and the rest of us can continue to die?????????

WHY, OH WHY must we continue to separate poor folk, and pit them against each other????

I really resent being in this position!!! Either I keep silent, and let myself and others like me fade away and be even more invisible, or I speak up, and get blasted because I'm calling it for what it is, which will be labeled "against vets". (I suppose next I'll be equated with having spit on vets!)

I really resent this, and declare that it's time to consider ALL of us poor folk, and work for HOUSING FOR ALL!!!

Enough of this pitting us against each other!

This is INSANE!

Because I DARE to confront this issue of pitting one group of homeless people against another, instead of the SANE approach of HOUSING FOR ALL!, there will be some here who will insist that I be flamed. Probably before even reading all that I have written.

So be it... that's the ugliness that is now rampant in this goddamned society. Go ahead, let me know that my life isn't worth a plug nickel.

Let me know that a local woman who was hit by a drunk driver and left brain injured and can no longer work and has been homeless for 2 years isn't worth more than a sneer.

Let me know that another local woman who got very ill, her insurance ran out, she wasn't able to work and now has debt she can't manage and lost everything and has lived in her car with a teeny trailer she pulls from place to place every two weeks isn't worth your consideration.

Let me know that we can all just do away with ourselves, and that *OUR* suicides won't matter.

I'm very disappointed in you, Monkeyman.

To paraphrase a famous quote.... "And ain't I a homeless woman?"
