Who is Amping Up the G-20 Fear in Pittsburgh?
Edited on Tue Sep-22-09 03:56 PM by Junkdrawer
So I was heading into work today and a brand-new-marble-facade medical building in Oakland was being outfitted with a new look: 3/4 inch Plywood sheets covering every inch of glass. More were being so adorned as I was heading home.

I hear downtown is even worse. And yesterday, we were talking about work plans and my normally sane supervisor said "You know what those protesters do? The get barrels of feces and water and fill up balloons so that they can throw them at the police. One of my neighbors is a cop and he said that, while they're trained to ignore verbal insults, he doesn't know what he'll do if he gets hit with one of those." I explained that I know a few people who plan to protest and NO ONE is planning anything remotely like that.

So I'm baffled. Where is all this bullshit coming from? Then I remembered: the AM/FM radio dial is chock full of RW nutcases I don't listen to. I'll just bet they've been agitating for weeks.

And you know what the result will be: Someone's grandma will shout "Medicare for all" and get her head bashed in by a cop who could just smell the shit balloon.

1. KDKA
Every time I flip by that station, they're ranting about hippy anarchists living under bridges.

4. 1020 on the AM dial? The former home of Limbaugh?
World leaders are going to think "My god, the depression is even worse than we feared. Look at all the boarded up businesses."

6. anarchists or provocateurs?
...

And suddenly there appeared a group, some 100 strong perhaps, in masks and black clothes, who went around breaking shop windows and looting, and engaged in some mayhem.

The police did not apprehend even one of them -- if they had, and as per US police procedures had been fingerprinted, perhaps their links with some agencies would have come out -- and the perpetrators remain mysterious and named as "anarchists".

To this writer, they seemed more like the agent provocateurs who joined in and created the unruly demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic Party Convention that led to the election of Republican President Nixon. There certainly were agent provocateurs around Seattle, but whether of some government agency or the equally powerful big business corporations, only time will show.

For two days, 30 Nov, 1-2 December, the organized protestors took over control of the streets, the police used tear gas and pepper spray, and declared curfew to regain control over the streets, and the National Guard was called in, but to the end participants at the conference were subject to siege conditions. And all this was used by US negotiators and Bill Clinton himself in a lunch address, to persuade and arm-twist delegations to gain two commitments -- one to bring in the labour standards issue into the WTO, and another, to use the environment issue to open the dispute panel proceedings to the environment NGOs, who believe they can present amicus curae briefs and change the views of panels (and perhaps collect more money from their constituents).

10. From late August: "G-20 summit demonstrators bemoan 'fear-mongering'"

Jessica Benner, with the Thomas Merton Center Anti-War Committee and resident of Friendship, participates in a news conference and rally yesterday on the steps of the City-County Building in Pittsburgh. The demonstrators claimed that the G-20 summit has emerged as a bully and not a benefactor and intend to call on City Council today to stand up to the "federal takeover and militarization of Pittsburgh," according to a news release.

Council could vote on legislation today

By Sadie Gurman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Secret Service and "fear-mongering" media are using "scare tactics" to undermine civil liberties and keep residents away from Downtown during the upcoming G-20 summit, say members of several groups that plan to demonstrate during the gathering of world leaders.

Gathered in the portico of the City-County Building last night, they urged city officials to protect residents from what they called a "federal takeover and militarization of Pittsburgh."

They said thousands of police officers in riot gear and a still undetermined security perimeter for the David L. Lawrence Convention Center and other sites represent the federal government's attempt to frighten residents and quash dissent.

"Pittsburghers have been victimized by scare tactics that make our desire and right to protest seem like a dangerous threat," said Melissa Minnich, of the Thomas Merton Center. "We ask that the city and media respect and support our work."
