Tea Party Protesters Protest D.C. Metro Service

Protesters who attended Saturday’s Tea Party rally in Washington found a new reason to be upset: Apparently they are unhappy with the level of service provided by the subway system.

Rep. Kevin Brady asked for an explanation of why the government-run subway system didn’t, in his view, adequately prepare for this past weekend’s rally to protest government spending and government services.

Seriously.

The Texas Republican on Wednesday released a letter he sent to Washington’s Metro system complaining that the taxpayer-funded subway system was unable to properly transport protesters to the rally to protest government spending and expansion.

“These individuals came all the way from Southeast Texas to protest the excessive spending and growing government intrusion by the 111th Congress and the new Obama administration,” Brady wrote. “These participants, whose tax dollars were used to create and maintain this public transit system, were frustrated and disappointed that our nation’s capital did not make a great effort to simply provide a basic level of transit for them.”

A spokesman for Brady says that “there weren’t enough cars and there weren’t enough trains.” Brady tweeted as much from the Saturday march. “METRO did not prepare for Tea Party March! More stories. People couldn’t get on, missed start of march. I will demand answers from Metro,” he wrote on Twitter.

Brady says in his letter to Metro that overcrowding forced an 80-year-old woman and elderly veterans in wheelchairs to pay for cabs. He concludes that it “appears that Metro added no additional capacity to its regular weekend schedule.”

1. Ask DC Metro if they give a damn.
I can assure you they probably don't.

2. Did he expect them to build more trains?
Does anybody know if it would've been feasible to increase capacity? At first blush, this seems silly but then again I don't know much about the DC Metro system.

5. I guess that they are suggesting...
that they should have used more taxpayer funds to accommodate their protest against wasteful spending

6. Outside and private events can pay metro for expanded service
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 12:55 PM by Mike Daniels
The groups that run the various fundraiser marathon events pay Metro out of pocket to open earlier on the weekends of their events.

I believe that Metro has also stayed open later and moved trains around to accommodate the crowds after evening football games and concerts at Fed-Ex Field and I believe the venues or promoters may pay to some degree for that extension.

As the tea-bagger protest was a privately organized event I would not have expected Metro to cover the cost of expanded service. Furthermore, Davis or one of his cronies should have been organized enough (but apparently were not) to at least find out what Metro's intentions were for service prior to the actual event date.

11. Is anyone from the Black Family Reunion pissing and moaning about Metro?
Edited on Fri Sep-18-09 01:31 PM by WorseBeforeBetter
(I think that event was held September 12-13.) Somehow I think not.

As someone who road Metro for years, all I can say is, "FUCK YOU, Brady." Metro is vital to the economies of DC-MD-VA, and not in business to cater to some assholes from Southeast Texas.
