In advance of an upcoming Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on renewing the USA Patriot Act, a group of U.S. Senators have proposed a series of “fixes” to the controversial Bush administration legislation which they say will help better safeguard Americans’ rights.

The “Judicious Use of Surveillance Tools In Counterterrorism Efforts” (JUSTICE) Act was proposed by Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jon Tester (D-MT), Tom Udall (D-NM), Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Daniel Akaka (D-HI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR).

It would sure be nice to see the elected representatives in Congress do something because it's the right thing to do for a change. Not because they get campaign donations, not because it's the easiest thing to do, but because it's the right thing to do for the people who trusted them with their votes.

Pathetic that there are very, very few who fit this description.

I'm not even sure if most in DC actually know what the right thing is -- not just in specific cases, but generally. I'm not sure they know who they work for or what they should accomplish.
