First of all I question the term "running from," when it just seems like they are not jumping on board. They are not running, but standing still. And that's exactly what they should be doing. IF they were jump on board, particularly the President, the talking points on the right would be validated, that Obama, Dems, and all related are simply reverse racists.
Let me give you an analogy if I may. Recently there has been a large bit of strife within a group I know. One woman is being targeting by a few of the group over an issue, but instead of discussing the issue, they are throwing lots of off topic nasty crap her way. So she gets pissed and starts going after the offenders, everyone stands around watching, nothing gets resolved, nothing stops. Though there are 3-4 in the one click, she stands alone and decries their unfair, bs, not based in any reality (ie they are being racists, though in this actual case it is religiousists). The other 20 or so in the group are grumbling and discussing things in hushed tones, but she's being loud enough no one feels the need to get really involved. Nothing improves, so long as she is defending herself, successfully or not, she will ultimately lose.
Now lets reverse a couple of things, lets have her stand quietly and instead have the crowd of 20 or so call the small click of assholes on the carpet, ah, now some results occur. Either they learn that their bs won't be tolerated (by 20, not just by the 1 they are harrassing), or they leave the group, or the group sees unity and throws the offenders out. None of which would occur if in attempting to defend herself, she ended up somehow saying anything at all that could be misconstrued or exaggerated. Speaking perfectly is nearly impossible, so likely the whole thing would dissolve into two wrongs.....particularly if the 3-4 in the click are anything like republicans who are skilled at somehow making their bullying look like victimization upon their victim's retaliation.
My point here is that these Democrats in office that are not embracing the "racist" talking points, are akin to the woman, for them to or for the President to jump on board just makes the discourse seem like a personal issue no one else needs to get involved in. They need to stay on topic, ie health care, finance reform, and so on.
It is OUR jobs and yes, Carter's job now, to be there raising hell, saying what the primary targets shouldn't say. To get into that ugly discourse and disagreement so that those that are needed to be focusing on fixing things can do just that. Imagine the amount of time and energy Dems would have to expel, individually and as a group, if any one of them jumped on board the "these disagreements are all based on racism" talking point?
Don't be mad at them. Whatever you think is the energy level that should be addressing this racism, spend it yourself in defense of them, it will more likely result in a better outcome than if they do.
