Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary dead at 63

(AP) – 12 minutes ago

DANBURY, Conn. — Mary Travers, one-third of the hugely popular 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, has died.

The band's publicist, Heather Lylis, says Travers died at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut on Wednesday. She was 62 and had battled leukemia for several years.

Travers joined forces with Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey in the early 1960s.

The trio mingled their music with liberal politics, both onstage and off. Their version of "If I Had a Hammer" became an anthem for racial equality. Other hits included "Lemon Tree," "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "Puff (The Magic Dragon.)"

They were early champions of Bob Dylan and performed his "Blowin' in the Wind" at the August 1963 March on Washington.

30. I seem to recall that Mary, her mother and her daughter were all arrested -
at a demonstration for equality. I can't remember the details.

10. It always happens in threes, doesn't it?
Though Patrick was considerably younger than the others, but he had been ill for a long time, and that "ages" you far beyond chronological age. :(

19. Yes, it seems that way but then Jody Powell also left us this week.
Maybe we just tend to group these into threes because it fits the myth? I dunno...

16. Damn, this is horrible news...
I have seen PP&M 3 times in my life and loved every concert. They were truly the best folk trio around - Mary was a class act and very funny in concert in her asides to the audience. RIP Mary - peace be with you.

22. My dad used to "sing about Puff" for me when I was going to bed.
That and "I walk to the garden alone."

I guess I was a kind of morbid little kid.

26. A geeze .... it never ends, does it?
Literally.

It never ends.

I loved you, Mary. You may not remember me, but I had a front row center seat at one of your concerts. I was leaning back, slouched in my seat, with my feet on the face of the stage, maybe two or three feet from you at times. At one point, you tossed your long blond hair and your sweat hit me. I thought that was the coolest thing ever!

35. Mine too. I had never heard it before but my brother bought the record, my parents were having
a cocktail party and we put it on our mickey mouse record player. That was the first song on the best of album. I remember playing it again and again even though my brother and the daughter of family friends thought I was nuts.

42. a wonderful woman with a beautiful voice . . .
her work with PP&M will live forever in their recordings and videos . . . they were my first real exposure to folk music way back in the 60s, when Lemon Tree became their first hit record . . . they were responsible for bringing Dylan's music to the masses, as well as that of other folkies like Pete Seeger and Gordon Lightfoot . . .

RIP, Mary . . . you will be missed, but your music will live forever . . .

p.s. Pete Seeger taught Mary Travers how to play guitar when her family lived in the same building as Pete and his family way back when . . . Pete just celebrated his 90th birthday, and Mary leaves us after 72 years . . . strange how things work out sometimes . . .
