24th annual D.C. Black Family Reunion is 9/12 - 9/13
on the National Mall... Sponsored by the http://www.ncnw.org/events/reunion.htm">National Council for Negro Women. This had been planned some time ago, before any of the teabagger nonsense.

So what happens when you have a previously planned event and then stuff a volatile set of ad hoc events into the middle of it? I suppose they will stay by the Capitol but then if the teabaggers encounter these folks all around the National Mall who don't look like them, will they freak out? Will they brandish weapons (and risk a catastrophe, being that they will be in Chocolate City)?

1. Um, given the teabaggers obsession with ACORN and conspiracies...
I see a potential problem here.

Oh boy.

2. Oh, BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
This is a dream come true:

A bunch of racist rednecks running into a bunch of African-American women who are gathered for the most wonderful of reasons, a long-held tradition.

There is not enough popcorn in the world for this event.

I'll take the women, any odds you want.........................................

4. Wait until Fox starts trying to fold the reunion numbers into the 9/12 numbers...
60% of teabaggers are African American? Who knew?

6. Exactly
You'll see footage of crowds (depending on the weather) that may be interspersed with teabagger hooligans holding signs full of misspelled nonsense, and they'll skew it to make it seem like the crowd shot is nothing but teabaggers, "from 'all races', and 'protesting Obama' in 'huge numbers'. :eyes:

7. There is NO way those ladies
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 09:23 PM by Tangerine LaBamba
are going to let those ignoramuses anywhere near their gathering - which really is a lovely tradition on the Mall.

They'll have those asshats eating their lunches off their own butts without as much as a by your leave.

The OP got the title of the gathering wrong - it's the "Annual National Council of Negro Women, Inc. Black Family Reunion Celebration" and it's been going on for YEARS! This is a very big event, with food vendors, and professional entertainment, and thousands of celebrants. It's a big, big deal.

Now, those morans are not stupid enough - I know they're not - to dare to try to encroach on anything even CLOSE to this wonderful tradition. It would not be smart, it just wouldn't, and I'm sure they've already been told exactly where they're allowed to squat.

I love it. I truly do love this.................................

The OP suggested it was a DC event - -
and it's not limited to DC.

I've only ever heard it called The Family Reunion. "Black" is new, since it was implied.

Whatever you call it, it's a great gathering. I've had some wonderful times there.

Are you going?

19. A number of cities hold similar events
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 09:38 PM by BumRushDaShow
And NCNW held the first one http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1077/is_n12_v45/ai_8904396/">here in Philly. We couldn't do any name implying because so many people around here have their own weekend-long personal family reunion productions that this event (and similar types) had to be designated by that name to distinguish. :P

I was originally going to be traveling down there Sunday, but have been down there almost every month for the past year and have had it with I-95 & I-495 and the crap at the I-95/I-295 split in Delaware. :banghead: No more traveling for me for awhile. I have been stuck in too many traffic nightmares (mostly in Delaware).

Edit to add that I explicitly mentioned D.C. in the OP to tie this into all the "protests" planned the same weekend in D.C.

21. I don't blame you -
that drive is about as horrible and deadly boring - except for the accidents, jams, construction, and stupid drivers - as any stretch of road in this country.

Yeah, now I see why you named it "DC" - it's a big weekend here.

The local news should be really interesting tomorrow......................

8. We have that same kind of event yearly in Philly
And the turnouts are pretty large. They usually include concerts and vendors and all sorts of side events. When we have had similar cultural events here in Philly, there have been upwards of a million or more who pass through during the weekend.

D.C. probably gets folks from all around VA, MD, WV, PA, and NJ and beyond coming up or going down for the weekend - especially considering the historic election. Their literature estimates about 250,000 coming through each day based on past tallies.

16. Yeah, that sounds right - spread out over three days -
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they've had half a million people attend.

This year, it's only two days, so the numbers might be a bit lower.

But the weather is going to be pretty nice, so I hope their turnout is really good......................

On one hand, the look on the faces of all those unreconstructed racists will be priceless!

On the other hand, I hate that their event could be despoiled by any of the lunatic fringe in the vicinity.

22. Black family means more than black women
Just for clarification, the event is called the D.C. Black Family Reunion. Last time I checked there were more than black women in my family. There are going to be plenty of black men and boys there too of all ages. The National Council for Negro Women is merely the organization sponsoring the reunion.

Simply stated, if the tea baggers stray from the Capitol and head to the National Mall they are going to run into a large group of peaceful, but ain't going to tolerate a lot of their racist bullshit, black people. Just saying.

36. Oh NOES! The Guardian Angels
There is supposed to be some marathons down in D.C. this weekend and the teabagger brigade http://www.wtop.com/?nid=798&sid=1656225">is supposed to end their march at the National Mall where the Reunion events are taking place.

But the piece de resistance will be that the http://guardianangels.org/chapters/dc/2009/09/02/black-family-reunion-celebration-sept-12-2009-in-dc/">Guardian Angels will be walking around the crowd as well. Well teabaggers, good luck with that.

37. The teabaggers won't be marching on the Mall
They are meeting a couple blocks north of the mall, at Freedom Plaza which is at 14th and Pennsylvania Avenue and marching the 14 blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol. I assume there will be a lot of uniformed personnel between the two groups, although the teabaggers are probably afraid of the Black Families and will avoid them anyway.

38. Then maybe WTOP's road closures link that I posted above was wrong?
Edited on Sat Sep-12-09 08:55 AM by BumRushDaShow
Where it said:

The Tea Party Express Rally and March will be held on Saturday, starting around 11 a.m. The march will proceed from Freedom Plaza to the National Mall, causing temporary street closures on Pennsylvania Avenue between 14th and 3rd Streets NW.

I haven't been to the Capitol in awhile but have walked the length from the White House to the Capitol through the Mall (where, if I remember correctly, the Capitol is at one end of the Mall?). I don't know what the layout of the events are for the Reunion but expect it will be a bit of overlap out there...

I feel for the D.C. police today in any event.

Edit to add that I wasn't saying they were marching "on the Mall" but to it (where the Reunion events are located within)....
