Papa Ratzi: atheists are responsible for environmental destruction, global warming
Give me a flippin' break. In a sanctimonious and erroneous speech of epic proportions, "On Development That Respects the Environment," the Prada Papa Ratzi takes a brief break from his incessant homo-bashing to give a swift kick of blame to atheists for sending the world into hell in an environmental handbasket.

The earth is a precious gift of the Creator, who has designed its intrinsic order, thus giving us guidelines to which we must hold ourselves as stewards of his creation. From this awareness, the Church considers questions linked to the environment and its safeguarding as profoundly linked with the topic of integral human development. I referred to these questions several times in my last encyclical "Caritas in Veritate," reminding of the pressing moral need for renewed solidarity" (49) not only in relations between countries, but also between individuals, as the natural environment is given by God to everyone, and its use entails a personal responsibility towards the whole of humanity, in particular, towards the poor and future generations.

..."Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied? If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the 'final authority,' and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible."

4. Sounds almost like he's decrying capitalism
Among all the other bullshit, of course.

"If the (worker)'s relationship with the (product of his labor) weakens, (work) is reduced to egoistic possession, (the owners of the means of production) becomes the 'final authority,' and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible."

11. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 09:54 PM by Arkana
NO, says the man in Washington--it belongs to the poor.

NO, says the man in Moscow--it belongs to everyone.

NO, says the man in the Vatican--it belongs to God.

Welcome to Rapture...

6. That this ass hat thinks his opinion on the topic matters is truly hilarious.
A former Nazi runs a fascist organization that hides sexual abuse of children for decades under HIS realm of control and direction. He doesn't get to moralize on any topic EVER.

7. Then it would logically hold that a multiplicity of gods and goddesses
would engender even more respect for creation, small 'c,' as it would be a happy group project worthy of folks' involvement, commitment, and participation.

A good number of the people driving bulldozers and earth movers in the Amazon Valley at this hour believe in God.

Says the man who lives in a guilded palace.

When does Der Popenfurher have time come up with this stuff? Between prayers and covering up child rape, I'd imagine he doesn't have much spare time.

You and your church are directly responsible for overpopulation, but you blame atheists for fucking up the environment. Good one asshole.

14. An attack on Atheism??? Not in my reading of the document.
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 10:27 PM by happyslug
While the pope did say the following:

Bearing in mind our common responsibility for creation (cf. n. 51), the Church is not only committed to promoting the protection of land, water and air as gifts of the Creator destined to everyone but above all she invites others and works herself to protect mankind from self-destruction. In fact, "when "human ecology' is respected within society, environmental ecology also benefits" (ibid.). Is it not true that an irresponsible use of creation begins precisely where God is marginalized or even denied? If the relationship between human creatures and the Creator is forgotten, matter is reduced to a selfish possession, man becomes the "last word", and the purpose of human existence is reduced to a scramble for the maximum number of possessions possible.
http://www.vatican.va/news_services/or/or_eng/text.html#2

And it is based on the encyclical he issued earlier this year:
http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20090629_caritas-in-veritate_en.html

The whole thrust of the argument is NOT an attack on Atheist but people who who put the self interests over those of people as a whole. Notice he throws in people who "marginalized" God with people who deny the existence of God. He then goes to point out that in BOTH cases (when God is denied OR marginalized) the sole purpose of people becomes a race for possessions AND THAT RACE IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HARM.

I can see how someone can see this as an attack on Atheism, but the main attack is on people who value possessions more then their fellow man. In the Pope's eyes any act that show that someone rejects the concept that you are your brother's keeper is a denial of God AND at the same time at attack on the concept we should help each other. It is the later he is attacking NOT people who reject God.

I burned down a patch of rain forest myself this morning using whale blubber for fuel. Then I got in my SUV limo and drove over to a party held on a man-made island in the middle of a former oyster fishery. There we dined on crudites and succulent endangered species. After our repast we linked arms in atheist brother/sisterhood and shot harp seals out of catapults.

And that was just today.

21. The environmental record of the (officially atheistic) communist world....
has indeed been abysmal. But the problem there has not been absence of religious belief, but absence of democracy, freedom to protest, etc. The US is obviously in a better spot than the old USSR or Rumania (think Timisoara), but rather than pat itself on the back, should look for ways to do better, such as decreasing the ability of polluters--among other private concerns--to buy politicians.
