Army Spc. Cody Putman, 22, of Reynolds, died Thursday in Baghdad, Iraq.
Details of his death are still unclear, but his mother, Pam Mow, said today that a bomb killed her son.
Cody is the son Pam Mow of Lafayette and Harry Putman of Nappanee.
Cody's wife is Molly Putman, 20. They have a daughter, Madelyn, 3.
About 9 p.m. Thursday, two soldiers accompanied Molly Putman to Pam Mow's home in The Landing subdivision in southern Lafayette to deliver the tragic news.
"He was just here," said Pam Mow. "It was unreal when they told me.
"I remember saying, 'I can't believe this is happening.' It sunk in today."
Cody came home March 14 for leave. His parents accompanied Cody's family to Florida for a weeklong vacation. He departed for Iraq on March 31.
Putman attended Hershey Elementary School, St. James Lutheran School and East Tipp Middle School in Tippecanoe County. He graduated in 2003 from Twin Lakes High School in Monticello.
