All this hyperventilating...

...over Obama by all the dittoheads.
All the commie, socialist, Nazi, not born here...etc..etc...nonsense.

Why don't they just admit that they hate the fact that a black man is president?

Why all the yelling about "indoctrination of our kids", etc...?
They can just come out with what's really bugging them and be done with it.

2. Honestly, that's the one thing that has me puzzled about the crazies.

Having grown up around hardcore racists in both Pittsburgh and Alabama -- and still surrounded by the same type in NC -- I KNOW they're dying to scream it from the rooftops. To shout, "Yeah, this isn't MY America. There's a n*gger in the White House!!!!"

And I get in their face and I egg them on -- cause I KNOW that's why there's such hatred (the world is no longer a reflection of them and they can't deny it any longer) -- but they don't.

They say liberals use the race card more than conservatives.

They deny it calmly, and I know they're lying.

I don't get it. I guess whoever is pulling their strings (Limbaugh, Faux, etc.) have drummed it into their brains to deny it at all costs.

These people are so good at telling lies that they've probably convinced THEMSELVES by now that they're not racist. THEY probably don't even really understand their hatred any longer. They've lost sight of the why's and just know they HATE.

Go figure.

3. this is where it gets weird

You can point out to a racist that they hate the fact an African-American is Prez and the standard comeback is, "You are playing the 'race card'".

Very clever dodge for sure.

simple as that... and essentially it is true. it will reveal that all they can do is lie because they have no truth to speak.

11. Worse than that -- they want him to fail so no black person ever runs again.
I am convinced that racism is at the heart of all of this.

9. Because they're hypocritical even about their bigotry.
They work in hypocrisy the way Michelangelo worked in marble.

13. While I agree that for many (maybe a majority) of these
people the issue really is race, I think it oversimplifies the problem to lay it ALL off on race hatred.

There are a lot of people who, for whatever reason (or lack of one), are terrified by the idea of the US becoming 'more like Europe'. Our culture is so wrapped up in the old saw of "American Exceptionalism" that the threat of any substantive change is seen as a threat to the very fabric of the nation.

Heck, there are people on DU who have more than a little fear of the US 'losing' it's 'unique' qualities . . .

*interesting look at the issues of American Exceptionalism here: http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/courses/ed253a/american-exceptionalism.htm *

14. To me racism and bigotry in all forms are intrinsically tied together...

including an irrational sense of nationalism when it must come in the form of berating other countries.

Typical bully mentality.

Perhaps the psychobabble 101 the conservative types deplore as far as poor self-esteem manifesting in many destructive ways is at play here.

We're a nation full of citizens with poor self-esteem and have to put others down in order to feel worth. Of course, fear is at the root of the lack of self-esteem. And with the world changing so much in the last few decades -- with persons of color and women rising to ranks of power more and more -- this threatens a certain population who need to identify with those in power in order to feel they have worth.

Throw the fundamentalist religious fervor into the mix and that is all heightened dramatically. "My religion is better than yours and you're going to hell if you don't believe what I believe."

Oy.
