White House press secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed conservative complaints about President Barack Obama's plans to ...
... address America's students in the opening days of school next week, in a meeting with reporters Friday.
Asserting that Obama intends to give students "encouragement," Gibbs said: "I think we've reached a little bit of the silly season.
"If staying in school is a political message," Gibbs joked, "somebody should tell the NBA."
Previous presidents, including George H.W. Bush, have addressed the nation's schools early in the school year. But some conservatives have alleged that Obama's speech, planned for Sept. 8, could represent an inappropriate intrusion into the classroom.
Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer stoked opposition to the address in a letter declaring he was "appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology."
