37 years ago today - Houston we have a problem
On 13 April 1970, Apollo 13 was almost to the moon when a liquid oxygen tank exploded. They didn't make it to the moon but the astronauts did get back to earth safely.

1. I remember that. I also remember when the guys on Apollo
1 died in the fire on the landing pad. Gus Grissom, Ed White, Roger Chaffee. Very, very sad.

My heart still aches.

5. I checked the 1970 calendar
13 April was on a Monday. If it were on a Friday I don't think I would have posted this. I'm too damned supersticious for my own good.

that musta been something!

I remember my parents waking us up in the middle of the night to come down and watch the first men walk on the moon.

Yes, as bosshog said, NASA was cool in the 60s.

18. I do
And, because I was a grade school student in Orlando then, as soon as we saw the missile lift off on tv, we'd run outside and be able to see the actual shot heading up into the clouds. It still gives me chills to remember the sun reflecting off of the capsules.

12. I remember that very well also. Commander Lovell's brother
lived in our parish in Chicago. In fact, his brother was a very good friend of my Dad's.

I was a senior in HS and by this time of the year "senior syndrome" had set in with a whole lot of us. We were messing around in one of our classes and Sister Laura brought all of us up pretty short with her comment about "acting our ages and please remember what the Lovell family is going through right now".

Thank God those three brave men got home safely...

20. I like the movie based on these events - the scientists were heroes
I pointed out to my young children that in this particular true story, the heroes who brought back the astronauts alive were "nerdy" scientists working night and day in the lab to develop calculations and strategies to bring back the craft.

Too often, violence and brute strength and use of weapons are glorified as the problem-solvers in our society. It was good to remember that lots of times, the unsung heroes are the ones using intelligence and skills.

Oh yes - I remember when it happened, when the teachers wheeled the big old black-and-white TVs on carts into the classroom, when Apollo 1 caught on fire, when Neal Armstrong put his foot on the moon. I remember.

21. I just watched the movie and the TV documentary for the first time
a month or so ago............thanks to Netflix, lol.

I was a teen at the time so I don't remember it being such a big deal. Boy, what I missed! Loved the movie (Tom Hanks is the BEST!), and the documentary was a great way to get up to speed on background first.

Duct tape and plastic bags.............wow

23. For some fascinating reading on the Apollo space program
I'd recommend A Man On The Moon by Andrew Chaikin.

I got to meet Capt Lovell in 1999. That was such a thrill for me. I remember watching all the moon shots when I was a little girl and to meet an astronaut was incredible.
