I dropped 20 bucks into a kettle today for the Red Cross and then I went home and smacked my wife.
I've been taught here on DU the last couple of days that if I do a good deed, then my bad deeds should be overlooked.

Let's see--- tomorrow I'm going to read to underprivileged kids, and tomorrow night I'm going to egg my neighbors house.

This could be fun.

1. Well I think the first one doesn't balance
On the other hand, the second one is probably pretty balanced - how long are you going to be reading to sick kids?

Actually what you are teaching me Trumad, and I appreciate you for doing so, is that if you can't be perfect there's no point trying to be good. Which kind of goes along with my current philosophy anyway, so thanks.

5. exactly, and here's another point I've learned...

If you don't agree 100% with someone, then they can claim moral superiority over you because you "don't get it." The measure of "getting it" is determined by those with the most righteous indignation, and there is no room for other opinions (even if this is America and you are entitled to your opinion).

So it's all or nothing.

46. don't you see the connection, though?
The comments themselves are the tip of the iceberg, or a symbol or indicator of the sexism and racism in this country that tolerates treating women and minorities badly. Why would a culture that sees nothing wrong with making the kinds of statements that Limbaugh, Imus, Beck and others have made, ensure that women and minorities do not suffer physical violence, gross unfair discrimination at the workplace, etc.? The fact that someone complains about the comments does not rule out their also complaining about the horrid conditions for women in the military.

You do understand that Trumad was using an analogy to make a point, don't you? Maybe that was not clear.

say physical trumps the words, and physical is illegal in this country... You won't be arrested for calling your wife a name, but they will arrest you for battery, for hitting her...

How you can say hitting someone is better than calling them a name? I don't understand that....

0r that we can't like a person's music (Ted Nugent, for example) or movies (Bruce Willis) because they're Republican.

And that Oprah's narcissistic fakery should be overlooked because she gives a lot of money away to good causes.

So, I have a volunteer mission to do at church this morning. I had been wondering what to do in the afternoon, but now I know: since I will have done church in the morning, I should be okay to sell crack to the kids at the school nearby!

I think that some people just look at things as black or white. Our whole excistence is full of grey.

I don't think this has anything to do with perfection because no one will ever be perfrect.

This Imus mess should show that regardless how good you think you are if you do a bad thing you have to pay the consequences.

You can be a "good" person but if you go on your job and call people what Imus did, chances are you will lose your job.

31. I Was Thinking The Same Thing...
Reminds me of a former boss (a radio station manager, no less) who felt his attendence at church on Sunday (more for show..."everyone" important attended this church, it was more status than faith) absovled him from screwing people over the rest of the week. So what if he just fired someone or screwed over a client...as long as he wrote the checks and showed up on the "honor roll" at his church each week.

A great analogy re: Imus. Hell, John Wayne Gacy donated time to local charities, too...under such "logic", he wasn't such a bad person either.

Cheers...

55. Ah, but remember-- To lead a blameless life and then wallow in
iniquity is unforgiveable.

But-- if one leads a libertine existence and then "sees the light" one is lauded as the very pinnacle of righteousness.

In other words-- you've reversed the actions. You are damned.

To clarify: From Ruddigore (W.S. Gilbert and A. Sullivan)
Act II
Sir Ruthven (nee Robin) Murgatroyd:

"For thirty-five years I've been sober and wary -
My favourite tipple came straight from a dairy -
I kept guinea-pigs and a Belgian canary -
A squirrel, white mice, and a small black-and-tan.
I played on the flute, and I drank lemon squashes -
I wore chamois leather, thick boots, macintoshes,
And things that will someday be known as galoshes,
The type of a highly respectable man!

For the rest of my life I abandon propriety -
Visit the haunts of Bohemian society,
Wax-works, and other resorts of impiety,
Placed by the moralist under a ban.
My ways will be those of a regular satyr,
At carryings-on I must be a first-rater -
Go night after night to a wicked theayter -
It's hard on a highly respectable man!

Well, the man who has spent the first half of his tether,
On all the bad deeds you can bracket together,
Then goes and repents - in his cap it's a feather -
Society pets him as much as it can.
It's a comfort to think, if I now go a cropper,
I sha'n't, on the whole, have done more that's improper
Than he who was once an abandoned tip-topper,
But now is a highly respectable man!"
