Most politicians in Washington and Tallahassee started treating me like I had the plague.

Even my political allies let me down.

Despite the fact I had spent most of 2000 campaigning non-stop for George W. Bush, the newly elected president never scratched out a cursory note.

I raised more money for Gov. Jeb Bush in a single fundraiser than had ever been raised for any candidate in Northwest Florida history.

But again, I got nothing but silence from Tallahassee.

No one ever accused the Bush boys of sharing their father's graciousness.

That's why the package Ted Kennedy sent to my house in East Hill was such a surprise.
