Flu Shot Hype-o-Rama
So now flu shots (the "regular" kind, not swine) are available at every Walgreens store for 25 bucks. I'd get one myself (ads and stuff on TV say EVERYONE should), but I'm afraid I'll get a strange reaction to it and get sick from that. Even worse, what if the flu shot itself doesn't work?

What to do? What to do?

1. I thought flu shots cost $10. Am I wrong, or has the price been
jacked up because more people are worried this year?

2. Putting aside that I wouldn't piss on a walgreens if it was on fire....
...the sickest I ever got from a case of flu, was one I caught a month after a flu shot. They're a scam.

4. Just because the flu shot isn't 100% effective, doesn't mean it's a "scam"
Claiming otherwise is just ignant.

8. Do you even know how flu shots work?
Basically, the CDC determines what they think will be the likeliest strain of flu to be dominate for the coming season.

Then they make the vaccine for that particular strain.

It's a crap shoot.

if that strain peters out and another one comes along, you are now susceptible to the flu.

So saying they are a scam is disingenuous.

However, with the swine flu, since they know the strain, there is a very good chance that the vaccine will work fine.

but if you choose not to get one, knock yourself out.

5. Probably because any thread on vaccinations stirs up a shit storm of ignorance
And there are many who don't like having their ignorance challenged.

6. I've always relied on herd immunity
Since everybody around me got the flu shot, I didn't bother. Their immunity prevented my exposure, so I haven't had the flu in about 30 years or so. (Herd immunity for seasonal flu requires about 95% of a population be immunized.)

This year I'll be supplementing my 'herd immunity' from seasonal flu with elderberry wine and maybe a stash of sambucol, the first because I want to and the 2nd because it works. ;)

7. Well...I am sure the flamers will love MY answer...
We are hippies (lol) and don't do ANY immunizations. I have a genetic autoimmune disease that could very well have been triggered by the immunizations I was given as a child, so that's my personal reason #1

without going into the whole of my personal medical research, I DO believe that vaccines MAKE you sick...
I have seen the results of the compromised immunity of my sister and her kids...all of which carry the same genes for the auto-immune problem... and I have also seen that my children and I get sick at least 75% LESS than their family.

Anecdotal, I know

but I have NEVER taken a flu shot and do not intend to this year either, swine or otherwise
so be mad at me for endangering the 'herd'
but I will sign the waivers and continue to protect my children from having that toxic waste injected into their bodies

Good for you. The latest swine flu vaccine has UNTESTED adjuvants in it to supposedly make it "more effective" :scared: :scared:

10. Everyone has their own reason.
We don't know what of effect this swine flu will have but by your reasoning, the people in 1918 should have been perfectly fine. "Your Immune System - If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

I on the other hand, do my research. I generally don't get a flu shot because I know how the particular vaccines are determined for the coming season and as a result it's a crap shoot. The CDC hopes that their vaccine will cover the flu they deem the most likely candidate to become virulent.

On the other hand, the swine flu is a very specific type of flu of which they have identified.

I will be getting a shot for that.

However, to each his own.

13. I'm the same as you
I generally don't get it, because I'm had mild but unpleasant side effects from previous jabs, and I'm never that sure that it's going to be really protective against the particular flu of the season. On the other hand, this time they definitely know that this particular bug is one that's going around, so I will get this one.

18. Knock yourself out
I prefer not to have toxins deliberately injected into my body. If I get the flu I get it however the mr always gets shot up and he gets sicker more often than I do.

12. Watching Mr. Rogers could also trigger genetic autoimmune disease
I heard this from someone who heard it on the radio.

We should take steps to ban Mr. Rogers from children under the age of 34 and there should be a mandatory warning for those older. I always knew there was something wrong with that bastard anyway.

16. There is a very small percentage of people who shoudl not get it
the rest should... knock yourself silly.

Oh and in your belief, you are wrong.

Ignorance and all, after all if we did not have vaccines, things like Polio and other nasties would continue to kill and maim

I am sure you are positive a good case of small pox is better than the vaccine...

Now maybe you should NOT take any modern medicine. ALL medicines have the potential to kill you anyway, from a bad reaction, I am sure you knew that already

:banghead: at the willful ignorance.

15. I have gotten one every year for the last 5 years and have had no adverse
side effects. I am a diabetic and my immune system is not all that great at times. I do not want to get the flu.
However, selling the shots at a store seems not too safe. Then again, not everyone can go to a doctor (thanks to the wonderful insurance we all just have...right?)
