Wow, looks like another "macaca" moment in Virginia
The Republican candiate for the upcoming governor race in VA. had been leading comfortably in most polls for a while....But hopefully his writings that just surfaced will sink him, it should, his views are straight out of the 9th century...He sounds like Dick Santorum..

"At the age of 34, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bob McDonnell (R) wrote a master's thesis at Regent University, a Christian school founded by televangelist Pat Robertson. In the thesis, he said government policy should favor married couples over "cohabitors, homosexuals, or fornicators." He also attacked the 1972 Supreme Court decision legalizing contraception by unmarried couples (since they shouldn't be having sex anyway). He also argued that since God's law on family matters predates civil law, it should also trump it. He also described working women as detrimental to the family. In addition, he advocated making divorce more difficult. In his 14 years as a state legislator, he tried to write these and other principles described in his thesis into state law. His problem now is that some of these views aren't too popular in increasingly blue Northern Virginia and his opponent in the election to be held in just two months, state senator Creigh Deeds (D), is likely to bring the subject up repeatedly. McDonnell is now trying very hard to repudiate the positions he took, but this could become his "macaca moment."

3. Interesting Timing...
My bets are someone had been holding onto this bombshell on McConnell in time for a "September" surprise. This stuff is damning to most women and he now will have to thread a needle that will be real hard to do. Does he deny he wrote what he wrote and alienate the fundies and rushbots who want a "pure" ideologue or does he take responsibility and lose the suburban and mainstream female vote?

Ironically, these credentials may have flown under the radar a couple years ago, but thanks to boooshie and the excesses of the right wing, words do matter...even written ones when you're 34.

7. No one held the info, McDonnell brought his thesis up to a Wsh Post reporter.
He was proud of it.

4. His Dem opponent is making hay out of it
and has pulled even with McDonnell in the polls recently, but whether Creigh Deeds can push the advantage into a win is uncertain. McDonnell has had the edge over him from the start, and may pull this one out of the fire by claiming his views have changed from the ones he held 20 years ago.

18. Of course his positions have not changed
but that won't prevent McDonnell from making an all-out drive to convince Virginia voters that he has changed, that his views are now moderate and inclusive.
The Big Lie has worked before, hasn't it.

6. I hope Deeds does get in, I live in NC, but Danville is the closest city,
I met Tom Periello when he was running against Goode, even did a little unofficial campaigning for him, while chatting up Obama. (whom I am not terribly pleased with but I could not possibly vote for McSenile and McKKKrazy)

I personally am sick of these Liberty and Regents grads, which are not accredited law schools by the way and ( * ) was busily appointing to ag and judgeships too.

I know fallwells school was established with the main purpose of overturning the constitution to install a biblical version (or their vision of biblical) of government that would make Sharia law look lenient. I have a pretty good idea having grown up around the evilgelcial soldiers for gawd movement in WVa where we had a lot of those nuts that supported foolwell and robberson with tithes and donations.

9. With these writings, a good ad company should
be able to create an ad as powerful as the 1964 "Daisies" one....I mean, what is in these writings is a smoking gun, videotape evidence, & a confession all in one....His views are centuries old & he needs to be exposed....

10. Assuming his views haven't really changed
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 07:20 AM by Papa Boule
I guess it is the mentality of The Family/C Streeter types that it's okay to lie and pretend they're more liberal than they really are in order to obtain the offices to which God has divinely appointed them so they can get busy doing God's work of overthrowing Democracy and establishing a holy theocracy. Under such a theocracy it would be a sin for the common people to lie and deceive, of course. That's a privilege reserved for the divinely appointed ones.

12. Repukes keep forgetting that the poorer they make the middle class,
the more the little women need go work outside the home, even if they'd rather stay home with the kiddies. They don't need someone slamming them for doing what they have to do to put little Johnny through college (or private religious school).
