Ailing Lockerbie Bomber Is 'Dying Now'
TRIPOLI, Libya (Sept. 1) - The health of the Lockerbie bomber, who has terminal prostate cancer, has swiftly deteriorated since his release from a Scottish prison less than two weeks ago, a senior Libyan official said Tuesday.

The head of the Libyan State Information Agency, Majid al-Dursi, said Abdel Baset al-Megrahi is in the hospital and described him as "very sick."

"His health is deteriorating fast since he arrived," al-Dursi said. Asked how long al-Megrahi could still have to live, he answered: "Only God knows when it will be over. But he is dying now."

There was no way to independently verify his health, and it was not clear how long he has to live. Scottish officials released him from prison Aug. 20 on compassionate grounds due to his cancer, sparking an international uproar. At the time, Scottish officials said doctors had determined al-Megrahi had less than three months to live.

1. Are they going to smother him with a pillow if he exceeds that...
"less than three months to live" mark?

3. Bet they fake a death....
...and let him go free. I would like some proof that he is terminal.

4. The Scots shame me with their extravagant compassion
Edited on Tue Sep-01-09 05:40 PM by gratuitous
It would be hard for me to do what they did. Several years ago in Oregon, a drunk driver killed a couple's child. The man was tried, convicted and sentenced to some years in prison for his crime. Between the time of his trial and the time when he was to begin serving his time, the wrongdoer's child was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and he petitioned the court for a delay in serving his time so he could be a comfort to his child. The couple whose child had been killed by this man joined in the petition, and the court granted the delay. I don't know that I could have done that, either.

But both examples inspire me.

6. Me too
I am against the DP, but I wanted the man who murdered a family member to stay in prison until he died.

He had no family to be released to, so that's what happened to him.

I was a teenager then, though. Now I'd want him released to a nursing home when he was no longer capable of harming anyone, slightly more compassionate than a prison hospital.

My family member is the third he was suspected of killing and the only one they could prove. He needed to be off the streets until he was incapacitated.

However, once he was incapacitated, compassion should have ruled his fate.

5. I don't necessarily have a problem with letting an old dude/dudette...
even a very bad one, live out his/her last few remaining days. I do have a problem with that being a bargaining chip for corporations, however.
