State police gear up for Hannity's pro-mountaintop removal rally

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- State and local law enforcement and highway officials are preparing to accommodate tens of thousands of people expected at a Labor Day rally in the southern coalfields.

The show will feature musicians Hank Williams Jr., Ted Nugent and John Rich and Fox News commentator Sean Hannity.

The Friends of America rally is scheduled for a reclaimed strip mine south of Logan, near Holden. The venue is split along the Mingo and Logan county lines, said State Police First Sgt. W.J. Scott, the district commander for both counties.

Scott expects between 60 and 80 state troopers will assist with security, traffic and other issues, starting at 6 a.m. on Labor Day. The rally runs from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and two lanes of traffic will be flowing on 22 Mine Road toward the site for at least a few hours, he said.
