Rest In Peace, Sheba.
Sheba was an abuse rescue dog. She spent the first six months of her life chained up and alone on a small outdoor patio, and she spent the next six months recovering from all the abuse she'd absorbed.

She was a black Lab who wore a white crest on her chest. After all she'd gone through she still managed to discover and revel in love- the people who took her in cared for her and gave her her puppyhood back. She also fell in love with me- it took a couple visits, but she finally decided I was her kind of hooman. She would greet me as I walked in the door. She would run to get her toy and bring it straight to me for play. She would lie at my feet and allow me to reach down to pet her and scritch her ears. The last time I saw her, about a week ago, she put her paw across my foot and claimed me as hers- it was a rare and precious honor for me.

Sheba passed away peacefully in her sleep last night. As of yet it's not known why she went away, but she will be examined so the answer may be found. There are four other rescued fur creatures in the house, and they must be protected.

Sheba was just one year old, but she died surrounded by love, and finally feeling love herself.

If you can, rescue an abused pet. It will enrich your life and theirs beyond all reckoning.

3. Profound gratitude to Sheba and other kind creatures....

who have endured the worst of humanity and yet give us another chance.

Thank you for being there for her Prisoner_Number_Six, along with her foster family. I'm so glad she experienced love and compassion, and enabled others to feel the same, before she left peacefully.

 to Sheba....

Thanks for sharing this. K&R

7. There's a Zen saying. . .
Something about how it's okay to open yourself up to heartbreak, because a lot of love gets out that way.

I rescued a wire fox terrier just over a month ago. He'd also been shuffled from home to home and had been relegated to a lanai by himself for months. Had a huge lump on his butt they'd never bothered to investigate, so my "free" dog immediately set me back about $500 in vet bills (not just neutering and lumpectomy, but a month's worth of meds to rid him of three kinds of parasites!) Sweetest little guy, but he acted almost autistic for the first couple weeks--didn't look at you when you talked to him unless you physically turned his head to make eye contact. In no time, he's become my barnacle and except for the cats (whom he believes to be prey--not sure how we'll cure that), he's the sweetest, most loving and appreciative dog ever. There are times he'll roll into my lap and give a look that says, "I don't know what I did to deserve all this, but isn't it GREAT?" I believe they really do understand what a gift our love is.

Hope the love heals your broken heart quickly.

8. I had a Sheba, too
She was a Border Collie owned by my parents. She lived 9 years with us.

A funny, quirky dog. She liked to lie down on the snow outside at night in the winter. Sometimes, she would get covered and all you would see is her nose sticking out, breathing. She had a strong herding instinct, barking and nipping at kids running around which didn't please our guests.

But she was a loving dog.

Sorry for the loss of your Sheba.

13. Godspeed Sheba
 I'm so sorry for your loss.

I have 2 rescue dogs here. My first, Jakey, is a labx who almost 5 years ago was on death row in Arkansas as a puppy, along with his siblings and mom and several other litters. He came with a huge pot belly that needed 4 different wormings to clear, along with ringworm on his tail. And a whole lot of love. The love of my life.

My second, Lunar (aka Looneytuney), came this past winter. He was 2 days from being gassed in Georgia. He arrived at about 6 months old in good health, but timid and knowing nothing. I had to pick him up and carry him to the car to bring him home, pick him up and carry him out of the car, pick him up and carry him into the house. He smelled DOG and his breath was horrible. But his 1st full day here, he rolled and rolled and rolled in the snow, sliding down the hill upside down and backwards over and over. Who knows how long he'd been in a crate or tiny, tiny, shit-covered kennel, but he was SO HAPPY to be out and about! By that evening, he was clean and smelled like fresh fallen snow. A few breath treats, chewies, and chew bones and his breath was a-okay too.

Jakey is rarely comes when called, lol, is very independent, but a lovebug and very, very gentle. Lunar is so happy to have a home and a person and a name. When I call or whistle for him he comes galloping full tilt, no matter how far off into the back he's roamed.

Rescue dogs are perfect. Simply perfect in every way.
