Breast-feeding mother asked to leave Olive Garden
Breast-feeding mother asked to leave Olive Garden
Woman refused to take baby to rest room

MICHIGAN CITY - The mother of an 11-month-old baby girl was asked to leave the local Olive Garden restaurant after she refused to move to the restaurant's rest room to nurse the baby.

Margaret Naas, La Porte, mother of 11-month-old Katie, decided she might like some chicken Parmesan for lunch on Monday.

After she ordered, Katie decided she was hungry as well.

"She wanted to nurse," Naas said. "It was 80 degrees out and I didn't have any blanket or cover with me," she added.

Here is where her story breaks from the Olive Garden's spokesman's story.

She said she lowered only one side of her halter top to nurse the baby.

I ate there 3 times in different cities as guest of friends/family. Each time was horrible. I must assume it is the chain.

It ain't italian and it is hardly food.

the Soupa is my FAVORITE, especially when I have a cold.

Thanks to a lady cook's website I found online, we got the recipe.

There's a bunch of great finds online for favorite restaurants' dishes - especially if they are no longer available...

to each his own, I suppose...

Screw 'em if they don't let babies eat.

If I were her...and in her position, I would have loved to have been able to say something like this...
in the most polite tone, not a sense of anger...but dry and persistent...

Well, I know the law, and I have a right to feed my baby, wherever I please.
You don't have to like it, but you do have to follow the law.
Perhaps I should call my congressman when I get home, and call your corporate office to let them know you are breaking the law.
I think will call my lawyer brother-in law while I'm at it.
I highly suggest you let us continue on with our meal...the baby needs a meal too, by the way...
You might want to pay for lunch too, seeing as the restaurant clearly has no idea what good customer service is...and you seem intent on ruining my "dining experience".
If people are complaining, perhaps you ought to explain where babies come from and how they eat. God intended it this way...you wouldn't want to go against GOD, would you?
And while your here, bring me some more water.

control themselves and carry their own lunches into the bathroom.

If they don't think bathrooms are a clean enough and acceptable place for them to have meals then they're hypocrites of the worst kind for thinking that babies should eat there.

In a story sure to get the popcorn icons clicking and tempers flaring on the Democratic Underground website, the mother of an 11-month-old baby girl was asked to leave the local Olive Garden restaurant after she refused to move to the restaurant's rest room to nurse the baby.

Talk about tailor-MADE.

can. My point to the writer is that not everyone really wants to go topless. My mother would not, I guarantee.

I'm pro nudity. It tends to level the playing field, overall.

The Japanese have a saying regarding the "furo," their version of the hot tub. It goes something like:

"The emperor and the pauper are equal in the furo."

That's my philosophy.

No it's not.

Get a clue! Women's breasts turn men on. Do men's breasts turn women on? I dunno.... I'm not a woman.

Anyway, there is a difference. Ignoring that is just dumb.

But I for one don't care if women want to run around topless. In a place like a restaurant it should be up to the management.

In NC it's only "indecent exposure" if the opposite sex is involved.

So now I'm off to sit by the pool naked with the boys....

208. it appalled me frankly.... and i can see why people don't breastfeed...
it's a conscious decision and I wouldn't ever try to push it on anyone. I am due with my third in a couple of weeks now and plan on breastfeeding as well, but I remember how mad it made me that there are no accommodations almost anywhere for mothers who breastfeed. I also know from my peer counseling training that I attended for WIC to become a peer counselor that at least in NYS they can't make you go somewhere else... at least that is what I was told. I don't feel comfortable, however, whipping it out and feeding a baby in front of everyone. I even will go in my room if I have guests. I just wish there were more places that would accommodate women who want to breastfeed their child... they shouldn't be able to force anyone to go in a bathroom to feed their baby.

I personally would never have thought to expose my breast to strangers (my own personal prefence), but I also don't remember forgetting to take a blanet for some sort of cover. Actually I used a crib sheet sewn into a small square since I thought blankets were too suffocating in warm weather. I did bf in public, and a couple of times at a restaurant, just not exposing my breast. My childs appetite, and hunger cries trumped strangers' sensibilities.

247. Some bathrooms have a sectioned off area for that. I personally would prefer that
women breast-feed their kids away from the public areas of "dining" and such. I think breast-feeding is healthy for a child but I really don't want to be somewhere and have a woman flip her tit out. Some women actually flaunt being able to do that. And some are offended to have that issue pushed in their face. Sounds like the situation was handled really poorly on both sides.

174. I spent all my nursing years wearing pullover shirts
So I could just slide them up and nurse with minimal skin showing. It worked. I never got thrown out of anywhere. I used to even nurse while walking down the street.

201. Ditto - only one kid, rather than two
but I nursed anywhere we were that she got hungry for 18 months. I know that included Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Ponderosa, and . . . Olive Garden.

Never went in the bathroom to nurse - that's disgusting. If I'm not going to eat there, not about to force my daughter to.

I'm all in favor of nursing, and of nursing in public rather than in some windowless stuffy closet - but moms - have a smidgen of common courtesy, and a half ounce of forethought and don't wear a garment that you have to remove so the babe can get to the food source.

210. Do you like eating with a blanket on your head?
Sticking a blanket over a baby's head while they eat denies that baby his or her humanity and makes them an object of shame. It also denies the baby (and mom) the important natural bonding experience of being able to look into each others eyes and for the baby, creates a poverty of environment.

Let the prudes of the world cover their own heads with blankies or napkins over their heads while they eat.

So they grow up to be something other than human because they didn't get to breast feed in public?

other customers were bothered? Well, that's their punishment for going within ten feet of the the Olive Garden, and think you're getting real "Eye-talian food." I'm half Italian, so I can't even set foot inside the place without getting a whole superstitious malocchio, sign of the horns apparition from warning me to turn back.

Our culture. So Victorian. We have so much work to do.

WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months, and breastfeeding plus additional foods up until 2 years or beyond.

It was an entirely appropriate thing to do. If they'd been out a while, it's possible her breasts were getting achy in addition to the infant being hungry.

179. I knew a guy in college
who had a real weird thing about women breast-feeding in public, especially in restaurants.

He said that whenever he noticed a mother breastfeeding publicly, he would always switch tables or sit as close to the breast-feeding mother as possible, then stare intently at her exposed breast until she got uncomfortable and left the area.

Ironically, he was always a pathetic loner type who had trouble getting a date. :eyes:

If we allow some naked breasts here and there before long there will be naked breasts all over the place. :hide:

230. The Olive Garden is terrible.
I'm not trying to sound elitist, but Olive Garden isn't real Italian food. It's like a "Friendly's" or "Ruby Tuesday's." Their breadsticks are too salty to be edible. Almost every one I've been to also had horrific service. There are so much better restaurants, probably for a comparable price, that don't use the fast food mentality when making your food, and use better ingredients.

And I could never understand why a boob scares people. Maybe they need to get out more often.

If this had happened in California, she could sue and win.

243. OK - I'll say it - she could have planned ahead like my sister and all my women friends and
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 11:44 AM by TankLV
acquaintences did - and FEED THE BABY BEFORE SHE DECIDED TO GO AND EAT!!!

Sorry, but there is a thing called "decorum" and if I walked into a restaurant and women were breast feeding all over the place - I'd leave, as I'm sure a lot of people would, too.

There is a time and place for everything.

People should act like "Ladies" and "Gentlemen" at all times.

Sadly, we've all lost that guiding principle.

Having got that off my "chest"...I also don't see what a big deal it was.

But really, one lady at one table doing it descretely should be no big thing.

I mean how many of us LOOK AROUND ALL THE TIME AT ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE AT THE RESTAURANT anyway? I certainly don't - I have a hard enough time trying to read the menu in the crappy light restaurants usually have! When I go to a restaurant, I WANT TO EAT! If the police ever wanted me to describe the other people, they'd have a hard time getting me to remember how many men vs women were there, let alone how they looked or what they were doing.

Now, fucking UNRULY CHILDREN and parents who REFUSE to KEEP THEM IN LINE, that's another story!

If your children aren't able to behave themselves in public, the little monsters should be KEPT AT HOME UNTIL THEY LEARN TO EAT PROPERLY - that's what my parents did - same for church, too.

Not all children's "antic" are "cute"...!!!

Sadly, those days are gone.

Your last line:

"Not all children's "antic" are "cute"...!!!"

makes me think of screaming babies on airplanes.

that just begs for a K & R

The article would be even better if it would include "smoking" and "pit-bull" in some form :)
