Priest held for burning ritual

A PRIEST who doubled as a spiritual and traditional healer was arrested in Transkei yesterday after being accused of causing 11 of his patients to be severely burned during a healing ritual.

Police spokesperson Mzukisi Fatyela said the priest, apparently linked to the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), would be charged with a number of counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and was expected to appear in court today.

“But we might arrest more people because it is clear that there were other people who helped to put the victims into the fire,” said Fatyela.

Police said that in total there were 11 victims , but the burns on all but five had healed.

Two of the five were taken to Mthatha General Hospital yesterday morning to be treated for serious burn injuries to their feet.
