Defense Attorney Calls Rape Victims “Whores,” and Worse
Every single time I argue that a rape apologist defense attorney has hit a new low, I speak too soon. This time, the evidence that there was still further to sink just came at a particularly rapid speed, and with a particularly hard impact.

Outside Charleston, West Virginia, a defense attorney defended a now-convicted serial rapist who specifically targeted prostitutes by repeatedly proclaiming the victims “whores,” and explicitly stating that their bodies and rights did not have the same value as those of non-sex working women:

Ed ReBrook, Gravely’s defense attorney, called no witnesses. But he summed up his case in a dramatic closing argument to jurors during which he called the victims “tramps” and “whores.”

“You cannot rape the willing,” ReBrook said. “They got in those automobiles with the intention of having sex for money.

“I would be horrified if any of the women in my life were raped, but I’m talking about decent, honorable women,” ReBrook said, and then dramatically raised his voice. “Not whores who have sex with many, many men for money.”

Assistant Prosecutor Fred Giggenbach immediately asked Kanawha Circuit Judge Tod Kaufman to stop ReBrook, but he did not.

“They are whores,” ReBrook persisted. “That is a perfectly usable word in the English language.

“Finding this man guilty of rape lessens the dignity of every other woman,” ReBrook said. “What they have done is turn sex into something disgusting.

2. I know a ton of women who think exactly the same.
That you can't rape a prostitute. But then, I've also heard you can't rape your wife.

Patriarchal thinking is like a plague on our land.

5. I wouldn't call that patriarchal, just plain criminal thinking...
to justify rape in any way is to encourage it. Why, with all the nutbags out there, just one like him saying it is OK, and there are sure to be some like the teabaggers type that will take it too far. There is nothing wrong with selling sex, no more than there is selling say, a massage, or any other body maintenance. America is so Victorian in its attitude toward sex, it's ridiculous! They put all the porn and sex toy shops out of town in the midwest hoping that it will be out of sight, yet people travel for miles and business booms. Sex is a natural desire for an altered state of consciousness, and quite healthy if done properly. But keeping prostitution out in the alleys and streets is killing women. Legalize it, regulate it, tax it, and keep women safe.

12. Great photo. Ed ReBrook has made red, doughy, potato-shaped heads "something disgusting."
Looks as if he has lost significant muscle tone around his mouth, too.

All that, and judgemental, too, even while promoting his sadistic monster client.

3. And this guy still has a license to practice law?
I knew lawyers were slime, but this is a new low! Legalizing prostitution would keep prostitutes safer, as it has done in the Netherlands, regulated, health concerns checked regularly, it would protect them by being in areas and brothels with security. I think there would be less attacks if men could purchase sex legally, on both prostitutes and other women as well, they wouldn't be so apt to "steel" it. Sure, there is always the seriously dangerous psycho who will attack women, and that's hard to guard against, but even some of these sex offenders might choose to simply head for the local cat house instead of committing a crime. Prostitution won't go away, it's been around for thousands of years, and has been an acceptable practice until the Churches decided it was a sin. Why? Because it is sex without procreation, and less children = less bodies in the pews = less $$$$$ Instead of just accepting it and doing the "Christian" thing, they put the practice on the streets and in the alleys, where women are most vulnerable to attack, hoping that it will go away. And since when is sex so disgusting? Hell, Sanford couldn't get enough of it! It must be OK!

10. You knew "lawyers were slime"? Mighty broadbrush there, stuball111.
Most lawyers, in fact, are not slime, and are bound by a professional code of conduct unlike many other professions.

A few examples of lawyers who were not/are not slime:
Marcus Tullius Cicero
Sir Thomas More
Abraham Lincoln
Ghandi
Thurgood Marshall
Michelle Obama
President Barack Obama
Former Congresswoman Bella Abzug
William Kuntsler
Sen. Ted Kennedy
Former US Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton
Former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela
Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt

"The father of five children and midget football coach did not testify. But jurors watched a taped interview in which he confessed to picking up at least 15-20 prostitutes and holding a knife to their throats or choking them while he had sex with them."

6. He obviously has a sex addiction, and ain't gettin it at home....
Hell, he has 5 kids? Maybe, just maybe, if guys like him could go to a legal brothel with assured discretion, shit like this might not happen. But he needs more than that... 20 years and some serious head adjustment.

You're assuming that what he wants is the sex.

9. If he just wanted sex, he wouldn't have to hold a knife to their throats.
He'd already paid them, they were willing to have sex. He is obviously getting off on power, not sex -- the power of choking women and holding knives to their throats while he gets his rocks off.

Which is why the fact that the victims are selling sex should have nothing to do with whether or not they were raped.

Please do women a favor and get over the idea that it is a man's right to have sex whenever he wants it whether he's willing 'to pay' or not.

26. when this happens to men, it's called torture.
Using a weapon to make someone believe they are about to die, strangling them, then violating their body against their will...how is this not torture?

period. otherwise it is rape. no matter if she is "loose" or whatever. I am betting this guy doesn't think much of women in general from what is coming out of his mouth!!

and his job is to get an acquittal and if that can be done by playing to prejudices, preconceived notions and biases, then that's how he'll do it.

23. Actually, I believe that a defense attorney's job is to see that his client
is fairly represented in court. Just as in other professions, some attorneys are mot as ethical in their behavior as others.
