Sometimes people who fight for the underdog do it as an objective reality and don't really relate to regular people in a subjective way.

Teddy engaged all of the people that he worked with from doorman to President.


NPR ran an hour long rememberances of the Senator.

at 26:00 it talks about the final negotiations on the Disability Act when Sununu started screaming at a staffer.

Kennedy yelled at Sununu "DON'T TALK TO STAFF THAT WAY - IF YOU WANT TO YELL - YELL AT ME".

It changed the whole dynamic as Kennedy's empathy to the staff infused the committee to have empathy with the subjects of the legislation. The negotiations quickly concluded and the legislation passed.


The whole hour is worth listening to.

So many of the powerful in any setting have massive egos. He obviously cared -- and showed that he cared -- about how his people were treated.
