Can DU break Grassley? Let Iowa know what you think of his politics.
We have a lot of people on DU. Angry people. People who are fed up with small-minded Senators from small states making decisions that will affect millions of us. People with computers and enough time on their hands to make a difference.

If Iowa, through Senator Grassley, wants to hold the rest of us back, let's hold Iowa back. Here is a list with Iowa's biggest newspapers, industries and decision makers. Feel free to let them know that you won't be traveling to Iowa to spend vacation money. Let them know that, boy, Pella makes a good window, but so does Anderson, made in Wisconsin, whose good Senator Feingold actually represents our interests. Let them know by name which refrigerator you'll choose over Amana. Let them know that you won't buy Winnebego, and that you'll choose corn from anywhere else, just as long as it isn't Iowa. Indiana, for instance, grows a nice sweet corn. Let them know there are other schools in the midwest where your money and your kids will go.

Iowa, because of its Senator, is hurting us all. People are in pain, they're going bankrupt, they're dying.

Let's let Iowa know.

The Plan:

1. Contact Iowa businesses and governmental agricultural interests to let them know you're pissed and voting against Grassley with your dollars.

2. Contact Iowa's largest newspapers and TV stations and let them know what you're not going to buy and why.

3. Contact Senator Grassley's office and let him know you've done 1 & 2.

1. Iowans, explain yourselves.
I realize this isn't the only place we have seen this phenomenon, but how can the same electorate vote for Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley in statewide elections? I under stand the power of incumbency and "he may be a fool, but he's our fool" as Randy Newman said, but still...

2. "he may be a fool, but he's our fool"
I think that may be the single biggest driving force behind politics lately. People want to win. It's like when Jimmy Johnson coached the Dolphins. Despite my intense dislike for the man, I had to cheer for him. What else could explain Bachmann and Palin?

15. Well, I've never voted for the guy.
My theory is that the DNC hasn't targeted Grassley or found a suitable Dem to run against him yet. That is why I'd like to see Braley run against him. He's great. Most of the previous candidates have been Dems that no one ever heard of before. Why sink $ into a campaign that you know you will lose? This is how it works, at least in Iowa.

17. Right
That is the way it works. It's the psychology of the voting public that is interesting. Obviously a lot of the same people that pull the lever for Harkin when he is on the ballot also pull the lever for Grassley when he is. There's kind of a disconnect there.

22. Exactly. I guess it's the devil you know vs. the one you don't.
I always vote against Grassley but I always know that he will win. People like his folksy mannerisms and the fact that he 'talks just like them'. It is embarrassing. I think every state has these types of pols. You can't get rid of them. They just have to eventually retire.

I'd love to see the DNC target Grassley and finally sink some money into defeating him. All they need to do is find a Dem who has some name recognition without too much baggage.

20. No they haven't. I don't believe there's been a serious challenger to Grassley
since early on, and for the life of me I can't remember what they guy's name was. From Waterloo, had a seat in the House, then had a DUI conviction close to election time. Anyway, there's been nothing but cannon fodder placed up against Chuck ever since. Even though Jim Nussle was defeated in his run for governor, Grassley's a whole 'nother animal.

3. Have relatives in Iowa
and according to my BIL, the conservative farmers in western Iowa like Grassley and all his warts.

19. He's right. It's really not western Iowa though, just eastern Nebraska.
Every negative stereotype you can think of dealing with rural folk and western Iowa embraces it. Plunging headfirst into the 1950's.

4. I'd like to see some of the Iowans on DU in Grassley's job,
and sooner would be better than later to say the least.

Up to now, Grassley was almost not worth the breaking, but of late he stands as an anachronism, like someone had sent him over from central casting to play the clueless yokel, though a clueless yokel slathered over with severe and recalcitrant cultural limitations.

Also he lied in public about the president's health care initiatives, not a small point.

For many years he's been duller than a basement door. This summer he's flaring into a high-maintenance impediment to progress as well, something akin to a familiar dog who in his older years grows weirder and weirder by the minute.

I'll do some contacting per the list you provide and will offer all good wishes with a view of replacing Grassley with a Democrat.

5. Thanks Saltpoint.
It just dawned on me this morning that one old, conservative, small-minded jacka** has that much power. One thick-headed moron had the potential to make me spend an estimated $10,000 more per year by the end of the next decade. And he seems to think the rest of us have to just stand there and let him.

6. Well, you're doin' it right by applying some heat. Grassley needs to
understand that if he blocks traffic, people are going to blow their horns and wave certain fingers out the window at him.

He could do the right thing by stepping out of the freeway. Absent that, I love what you're doing and hope we can force Grassley to reassess.

7. I have an appointment Monday morning to see about getting some 50's era windows replaced...
The company coming to look at them comes highly recommended, but only uses Pella. I'm going to have to let him know that I just can't do it. I'll take Feingold's Anderson. Hopefully, he'll pass it on to the Pella rep.

8. That's how it has to work when respectful discourse has failed, and I'm
throwing some of the blame on Grassley, who despite obvious cognitive limitations is still smart enough to know that all citizens deserve and should have health care and coverage, and that the insurance companies are the big bad wolf who want to eat grandma and not a Democratic president who wants to save her.

Loud cheers from my house to yours, carry on with the good fight, and continue to kick butt.

9. This is a really bad idea.
Go after Grassley's politics, lies, distortions, and reversals. Make all these well known.

Keep the hell out of Iowa's local politics. If he represents them, so be it. Let them take care of it.

11. Because pointing out lies and hypocrisy really seems to hit the Repubs where it hurts?
Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 08:33 AM by urgk
Are you kidding me?!!? They have no capacity for accepting that kind of criticism. Republicans understand money. Economic impact. It's all about the dollar. You have the majority of state donors pressuring GRassley and maybe we'll see some policy changes.

16. Fortunately for him, CT had laws most states do not have...
which permitted him to run as an "independent". In most other states, he would have been gone. He figured out how to game the system.

21. Tie Grassley's town-hall speeches together with Betsy McCaughey's appearance on Jon Stewart
Grassley and his fellow cohorts, have been using McCaughey's "death panels," and killing off grandma as their fear mantra to stop any chance of a health care reform bill. Her appearance on Jon Stewart's show and the u-tube video's allowed the world to see what an incredible moran she is thus the reflected moran's such as Grassley for using her as a reliable source. Wonder why she resigned or was fired immediately after her appearance???? What a political ad this would make for the Dem's.
