ABC's The Note: Health care mini-mobs have it "figured out"

August 20, 2009 2:09 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

Here's The Note item on a Bloomberg News piece:

One side has it figured out: “The town-hall meeting, a format as old as democracy and a staple of congressional recesses, has taken on new force this summer, with consequences that so far have backfired on the president’s efforts to retake control of the health-care debate,” Bloomberg’s John McCormick writes. “Obama’s electronic brigade of supporters, meanwhile, has so far struggled to find traction to help push policy initiatives, something the White House is trying to change.”

Behold the genius of the mini-mobs! Politically, they have it "figured out." They've unleashed a "new force this summer" and have seized control of the health care 'debate.' How did the mini-mobs do it? On that count, ABC and Bloomberg News remain politely mum today.

There are no references to shrieking free-for-alls, loaded guns, swastikas, Nazi posters, shouts of "Heil Hitler. Neither The Note nor Bloomberg News bother to mention the death threats that have been issued, the politicians tied up in effigy, or the acts of mini-mob vandalism that have taken place.

Why dwell on the unpleasant details people? All ABC and Bloomberg News care about is that the mini-mobs are winning and seizing control of the debate (thanks to the press), and that they have it "figured out."

1. actually, these techniques of disruption and disinformation are not new, Germany's Nazis "figured
it out" in the 1930's and used these exact same techniques - "The Big LIe" (currently: "death panils", rationing, paying for abortions, et al, ad infinitum) - shouted with endless repitition. The shouting down of others to prevent any rational discussion of the issue at hand - both techniques the Nazis used against deliberative dialogue and to foster hysteria - all to subvert representative government and to obtain their goals of a totalitarian state.

Germany's Nazis also knew to claim they were being victimized by "the others" (in the German Nazis case they blamed the communists for wanting to take over the Government) as threats to personal liberties when the group claiming to be victim have no understanding of, or commitment to diversity of opinion nor a system which respects such diversity. They only want a system that mirrors their own ignorance and prejudices. And of course, tolerates no dissent from their doctrines of faith.

2. ABC is full of bovine fecal matter.
These are not new tactics, so there is nothing to "figure out." Mobs have been used for aeons to rile up the powers that be. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't.
Discussion and intelligent conversation work better than fear and loathing.

5. Still Isn't Obvious To You?
What's going to get more headlines and video footage on the evening news?

People politely trading information and attempting to persuade others on Facebook, or showing up to embarrass their local Dem rep, in person?

6. ABC condoning and minimizing Unamerican, Nazi tactics. Wow.
Now I'm wondering what they were reporting during the rise of Hitler in Germany and how hard they must've worked to keep the U.S. out of the war.

Does the media really believe fascism would be good for the U.S. (and their profits)?
