Children walk down Lombard St. also known as "The World's Crookedest Street" in San Francisco, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009. Lombard St. was transformed into a gigantic Candy Land board game to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the game. The Candyland board game was designed by Eleanor Abbott while she recovered from polio in the 1940s. The game consists of a winding, linear track of 134 spaces. It is built around a simple story line about finding the lost king of Candy Land.

Who knew about Vermont Street? Not me. I'll have to check it out the next time I visit.

I always loved going down Lombard because of the beautiful flowers.

I almost lived on the crooked part. I suppose it could have be neat except for the constant stream of traffic.

11. Yeah, but Vermont feels like an alley

Lombard is big, pretty, and lined with houses on both sides. It feels like a real residential street. Vermont is narrow, poorly maintained, and lined with overgrown weedy patches, garbage cans, and graffiti covered concrete walls. It feels more like a windy back alley than a residential street.

Which is why Lombard is more famous.

18. I drive down Vermont several times a year...

sure it is not as manicured as Lombard but it is not lined with weedy patches, garbage cans and graffiti. The trees lining it are quite beautiful. Every person that I've led on a ride down it (tourists and San Franciscans alike) love the sharp switchbacks and wild ride.

19. Maybe I drove down on a bad day.

A friend in SF mentioned that Vermont was the windiest in the city several years ago, so I took a drive down it. The flower beds were full of weeds, there was graffiti everywhere, and I literally had to drive around garbage cans in the street.

I just took a "virtual" drive down Vermont again using Google Streetview, and it looks a lot better than it did when I went down it. The three foot tall weeds weren't in the flower beds and the garbage cans were nowhere to be seen. The graffiti was gone too, but you can see the painted over graffiti patches EVERYWHERE marking the spots where it once was.

I don't know how old the Streetview photos are but they were certainly taken a while after I went down the street, and after it was cleaned up.
