The top 10 vehicles for pet safety

The animal safety group Bark Buckle UP and Edmunds.com have put together a list of the top 10 2009 vehicles for pet safety.

According to Bark Buckle UP, a 60-pound unrestrained dog can become a 2,700-pound projectile in an accident at just 35 mph.

Christina Selter, Bark Buckle UP Founder and Pet Safety Expert, says even the calmest, unrestrained pets can become frightened in a moving vehicle, distract the driver and cause an accident.

"In the event of a sudden stop or accident, the animal can injure other passengers or be thrown through the windshield, then hinder the efforts of rescue workers or even cause another accident by escaping into the street," she said. "We don't question the importance of seat belts for human passengers, and we should always provide the same protection for our pets."

The top 10 vehicles: the Dodge Journey, Ford Flex, GMC Adacia, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Liberty, Mazda 5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Tribeca and Volvo XC70.

1. Great! Now I can text on one phone, call on another at the same time, and Fido is safe if I crash.

The ultimate point is, cars also need to be people-safe and anybody who texts/talks while driving is a damn fool. I don't mind if that person hits a tree, but because of the possibility he'll hut a family full of dogs and cats... and some pesky people too...

I won't be buying a new vehicle anytime soon... but it was good to read anyway!

4. A nut rear-ended us while we were sitting still at a stop and our Wheaten
flew up towards the front of the vehicle. He was fine as he bounced against the back of my husband's seat. We have a Subaru Outback. Highly recommend it. We fit three dogs and five cats in 3 carriers in the back when we moved. And an Ovation guitar.
