Grassley to Dems: Let’s keep working together
By Alexander Bolton
Posted: 08/19/09 12:23 PM

Sen. Chuck Grassley (Iowa), the powerful Republican who has spent weeks working on a healthcare reform compromise, is urging Democrats not to abandon bipartisan talks despite growing pressure from liberal activists and White House officials.

Grassley reacted Wednesday to news reports of growing sentiment among White House officials that Democrats should pass a partisan healthcare reform package, relying entirely on Democratic votes.

“I’ve said all year that something as big and important as health care legislation should have broad-based support,” Grassley said in a statement to The Hill.

“So far, no one has developed that kind of support, either in Congress or at the White House. That doesn’t mean we should quit. It means we should keep working until we can put something together that gets that widespread support.”

Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over paying for a healthcare overhaul, struck a conciliatory tone a day after Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl (Ariz.) called on Democrats to scrap their proposals and start over.

“There is no way that Republicans are going to support a trillion-dollar-plus bill,” Kyl told reporters.

15. The purpose of the delay is to deprive Ted Kennedy of the opportunity
to vote on the bill. This is positively macabre and cruel. In the interview with Congressman Weiner, Tweety spilled the beans (as he does so often). The bet is that if they can just wait long enough, Democrats will not have 60 votes because Ted Kennedy will not be able to vote.

What a bunch of scum those senators really are.

16. Screw Grassley. Dirtbag.
A man of no integrity. So much for "bipartisanship." Once he went over to the "death panels" lie, there's no turning back.

Go worship your leader, Rush, senator.

Obviously it came after the Dem's "go it alone" news broke Tuesday night.

Maybe a little more pressure wouldn't hurt.

27. But TRILLIONS-PLUS wars and tax cuts are o.k.?
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 04:26 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
:wtf: ever

We all need to keep pointing out that if we can pay for two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and tax cuts for the rich, then there should be NO reason why we can't set aside some money for HCR. A trillion-plus (whatever the exact figure) is a drop in the bucket when compared to everything else THEY want us to keep paying for. If they still have a problem with this, then maybe we should be talking about rolling back some of the tax cuts or, even better, going ahead and getting us out of Iraq so that we don't have to keep sinking billions and trillions over there. There ARE plenty of possible solutions that the Republicans just don't want to talk about or have already taken off the table because they simply don't care. They've got theirs and I guess they think that the rest of us can just take a hike off a cliff for all they care.

28. It's time to face reality and stop letting republicans waste our time and money.
They're never going to support any reasonably effective health care reform that will benefit the majority Americans.

Grassley's real intention here is to haggle until republicans can figure out some way to kill real health care reform.

30. Bottom line. Grassley and the Repub minions want to defeat
any progressive ideas that conflict with their capitalistic ideologies. Power corrupts and Grassley is a fine example of ideological corruption.
