Kay Bailey Hutchison longs for the era of segregated Texas schools.
http://www.statesman.com/opinion/content/editorial/stories/2009/08/18/0818herman_edit.html

Hutchison offered specifics on some topics, but was heavier on identifying problems than listing solutions. To be fair, there's plenty of time for that as the March 2 primary approaches.

On education, Hutchison committed what's become a common sin among candidates of her generation.

"I want to help to create an education system like I had," said Hutchison, La Marque High School, class of 1961.

No thanks. I'll pass on that.

Yes, 1961 was a great time to be in Texas public schools — if you were white and didn't face learning disabilities. La Marque High School was segregated when Hutchison attended.

Forgive me for clouding some folks' rosy memories of school days gone by, but I don't want to create an education system like the one Hutchison (or any other candidate of her generation) had in the good old days.

1. Ah, yes. The good old days when the White Man ruled and everyone else was subserviant.
By those measures, Ms.Hutchinson probably wouldn't be a governor.

:eyes:

And, in case I actually need this ----> :sarcasm:

2. Well, by current Texas measures, she's still not.
But I will accept that she wouldn't be a senator.

6. Touche!
:P

Just to clarify, I meant that by those standards, she'd never be a governor because she's a woman.

I'll give you, she is a Senator... albeit not a very good one! :P

3. Perry had a plane flying around pulling a "release your taxes!" sign

4. I'm sure she meant
She wanted kids to get a good education like she got.

My earliest memories of Texas school was about 1967-68, and my school certainly wasn't segregated then.

That said she's the last person I would ever vote for to be governor, besides maybe Perry.

But they have a lot of money behind them, a lot of money. And no clear dem opponent standing out.

5. My schools in Texas were segregated until after my graduation in
1965, and this was in a county with about 30% black citizens.

7. LaMarque is a flat, stinky little town in the shadow of refineries.
It was fully segregated back then, as were all Texas schools until the mid to late 1960s. It took over 12 years after Brown v. the Board of Education before Texas followed the decision.

The only good thing that can be said of Kay Bailey Hutchison is that she's the least embarrassing of all the GOP state officials, except our State Comptroller, who is a decent person.
