how the hell is this a big fricking deal?

I'm assuming the AARP probably loses way more members simply because they died, some of them probably because of the crappy healthcare they have.

http://mediamatters.org/research/200908180038

60k - people who dropped their AARP membership over health care reform

300k - normal number of people AARP loses each month, probably because this is the group that represents our senior citizens.

400k - number of new members AARP gets each month (because we are aging and eventually we join, if only for the great discounts).

40million - Number of AARP members

2. Yeah tell that to the Media
I like that the AARP won't be held hostage by 0.15% of disgruntled ex-members.

3. BREAKING: 300,000 Die or Quit AARP as Obama Introduces "Health" Reform.
That would be the kind of headline MSM would run and it would be factual.

But very misleading.

Like most of their reportage.

5. As my parents would say - the discounts!
I mean most places offer some sort of senior citizen discounts but you get some great deals thru AARP.

And since AARP is on our side that's good enough reason for me to join when I get there hopefully ages from today

16. Not just the discounts - they are a powerful lobbying group
And as the membership changes, they change what they lobby for. After Medicare Part D was passed, the feedback they got from the membership was negative and that is when AARP started pushing for health care reform. The members did not like Part D and saw that it is not reducing health care costs, plus I suspect a large number are having to help out their children and grandchildren when they have health care crises.

AARP was also sensitive to the efforts of Bush to privatized Social Security and to the criticisms of Medicare. They know that things will have to change to save both programs in the long run. That has changed how the organization lobbies, even if it upsets some of the membership.

If more liberals joined AARP and let them know what we want, they would swing even farther to our point of view.

7. The only thing they're good for is cheaper car insurance,...
but that's only a few bucks. As a member, I never really remember them fighting for anything for seniors, in case they might offend some corporations. I support MoveOn if I want my voice heard.
