Obama's not first 'Joker' POTUS
Obama's not first 'Joker' POTUS

Does this joker look familiar? Yup, that's George W. Bush, just to let you folks know that Barack Obama is not the first or only president to be given the Heath Ledger makeup treatment.

I bring this up now that the joker behind the notorious Joker-Obama-socialist artwork has been revealed here and here -- and he's not a Republican. He's a bored college kid from Chicago, by his own accounts, who supported Dennis Kucinich!

Yup, Obama apparently unnerves young Firas Alkhateeb, senior history major at the University of Illinois, because he is not far left enough!

Anyway, as I blogged recently, I'm not mad at him. Whether the Joker-Obama poster is my cup of java or not, it's protected as fair political comment under the letter and spirit of the First Amendment, long may it wave.

Besides, the best response to objectionable speech is more speech. As my conservative readers are quick to point out, President Bush often was depicted on various occasions as The Joker among other creatures, like a vampire, a clown and the devil himself.

1. That doesn't bother me too much...
We had much more fun with this one.

And it struck much closer to home than Obama / Joker.

2. The Obama = Joker meme falls flat because the Joker was an anarchist type
in the movie with Heath Ledger anyway. Its makes no sense whatsoever. The Joker wanted to make society uncomfortable and make people fight with each other so he could take advantage of that. Obama is nothing like the joker and is not like an anarchist in any way that I can see. Its like comparing Obama to Rorschach from the Watchmen, also an anarchist.

6. And Batman is a vigilante that thinks just because he thinks someone
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 03:36 AM by RandomThoughts
is bad, then he can do what he wants to them without law or justice. Batman promotes the idea of lack of laws, and also has a class angle to it, where the rich can use their money to maintain what they think is best. (Many wealthy people are really good people, many believe in justice and compassion, but I am only speaking about a perception of the ideas in the Batman movie)

Batman is the anarchist, since he does not believe in rule of law, because of his vigilantism.

You could also say that Batman was told from a perspective that makes the joker look like something he is not. As I said before, maybe the movie Batman is one of the items in Batman's utility belt.

It is possible all the Batman stories are told from Batman's perspective and smear the joker unfairly.

Lets compare it to history, what would a rich industrialist that believes in vigilantism do in the following situations. And what would he say about his opposition.

What would the rich person in the story Robin Hood say about Robin and his MERRY men, he would say they were violent and are not serious, as he used vigilante ways to attack them.

What would a corporatist say about a union movement, that wanted fair wages, they would send in people to make it look violent.

What would a Republican say about the peace movement, they just sing and are always happy, and then they would put provocateurs to try and make the peace movement look bad.

What would a Conservative say about a hippy, they would say they are just happy and loving and then blame them for riots or unruliness.

What would an authoritarian say about a protest at an oligarchy meeting, they would say they don't understand and are just full of idealism about love, and then point out a few so they can say the movement is violent.

I did not watch the Batman movies, but if Batman made those movies, with his belief in vigilantism, he would not have a problem mischaracterizing the joker and making him seem to be something he is not.

(There is another common Joker theme, the most common is the nihilist, someone that thinks life is just a joke and nothing matters, their are many false doctrines that promote that idea. But the idea of that doctrine is that the secrets create despair, so keep them hidden. By making people think it is about despair, they try and hide many truths because they see them through that false doctrine.)

Edit: In reality President Obama has nothing to do with the Joker character, it is a fictional character with many possible interpretations. Some people like the association that dislike President Obama for other reasons, and it lets them insult him without having to state any reason for it.
