Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 09:50 PM by thenext8seconds
I think that President Obama has been looking "weak" to his base on purpose so he could show that he at least TRIED to be bipartisan by way of his comments about "with or without the public option", etc, etc....

Now his administration can just go at this alone without being accused of not trying to be bipartisan.

I think Obama just had to punk on on this whole charade of a public option not being a big deal..

And by the way I'm referring to this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6341387

and this breaking NY Times article which was the reason for the thread: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/19/health/policy/19repubs.html?_r=1&hp

1. haven't they learned... no matter what they do they will be accused of being partisan
and trying to ram things through.... they will be accused of ignoring the republicans ideas, even though the republicans don't HAVE any ideas... no matter what they do the republicans will try to make them look bad.

3. I honestly believe those 6 words didn't mean dick
He meant to point out all the other elements of health care reform and that's all he did. People are just reading way more into those words than are there, and actually helping make an excuse for him to dump the public option even though it was never his intention before now.

5. Obama is a smart man and a strong closer.
He did the same thing on the stimulus package, going over the top on trying to compromise with Republicans in order to prove they had no interest in making any sort of deal.

8. He is a political genius - but we should also look at his opposition
He has figured out how to circumvent the "one trick pony" Republicans. They say no to everything. They constantly get overconfident and over play the hands they are dealt. They telegraph their every move and knowingly make the most outrageous lies to prove their points.

While they act like spoiled, undisciplined children, Obama allows them to throw their tantrums, make themselves look absurd, and then he sternly disciplines them with the majority of the country behind him. He is the master.

7. What is even the point of having these kind of conversations.
We have a job to do because WE are the government. Our job is to advocate for the best possible health care system to serve ourselves and our fellow citizens. The way we advocate is with our voices and bodies our intellect and passion. We would hope that our elected representatives would follow our lead or step in front of the issue but if they don't, they should know that they will suffer at the ballot box. As Tony Benn said in SiCKO, our elected politicians need to fear our power in legislate what is best for their constituents.
