Wow! Someone else just posted about the same kind of problem.
that I am having.

I am starting so many posts because I cannot respond to posts begun by others.

DU places too many cookies on my computer. I'm using Mozilla browser and it has been incredibly slow for a little over a week at least. I have a new computer with Vista and thought that might be the problem.

Because I was getting as many as 70+ cookies in just a day or two, I increased the intolerance of my computer for cookies. When I try to respond to a post on DU now, I get a notice that I can't respond because my computer does not accept the cookies. What a relief to find out I am not alone.

7. Being old and computer dizzy isn't funny. LOL
Sorry, but I recall with nostalgia the sound of the librarian's stamp. I'm great with word processing, but overwhelmed by computer technology. You may think it is funny, but, hey, some old lady like me once wiped your little behind when you were baby. In memory of that beautiful lady, please be a little indulgent. Some kind DUer just told me what to do: go to Options and de-select third party cookies. We shall see whether that helps.

4. Every website in the world uses cookies, not just DU.
Sorry to be so frank, but you really only have two choices here.. deal with it or stop using the Internet.

Here on DU?

I'm notbeing snarky - I am just curious.

Has anyone at DU admin confronted any of this? I find that if I try to post and get the "Cookie" warning,it is usually because an application is running that got put in the backhground (Other household members have Photoshop on all doay)

And if I end that program, and close out of the other web browser windows that might be open, I solve my problem.

15. Someone explained that I needed to change my settings in Options
to refuse third party cookies. I don't mind cookies for DU. I just don't want cookies from every website to which I connect from DU. I tend to actually read the articles that DUers link to. That is how I get so many cookies.

$ 19.95 cookie removal programs. Using DU the way you describe, we end up with cookies too - but every two or three days we run some program and it zaps them.

6. Go to filehippo.com and download CCleaner and run it regularly.
It will clean up all the crap on your system and it will run better.

10. You can set Firefox to erase all your cookies
every time you close it. It's under tools>options>privacy. There's a drop down menu after you tick "keep cookies until" with an "I close Firefox" option.

I find that keeps the trash to a minimum from day to day.

You can also click "tools" and "clear browser history" when things slow down and see if that helps.

19. I too delete all my cookies when I exit my browser.
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 04:36 PM by hunter
I tend to open and close my browser several times a day and log off the computer whenever I'm not at my desk. I've been doing that approaching forty years now, so I'm not going to stop. The habit was burned into me as a student and at some of my early workplaces.

My cookie list is always small. In opera (my main browser) I can use Tools>Advanced>Cookies to get the Cookie Manager and see which marketing bots I've been exposed to, and I could delete individual cookies if I felt like it.

The disadvantage is that I have to log into sites like DU often but it's not a big deal if I can directly bookmark the login page.
