I have to move for health reasons, so I went to post on craigslist and ran into this:
____
Stating a discriminatory preference in a housing post is illegal, is prohibited on craigslist, and can be expensive:
* you can be fined more than $10,000 for each discriminatory ad, plus damages in court, plus loss of license if you are a professional
* avoid phrases which could be interpreted as discriminating by race/color/origin (e.g. 'hispanic area'), religion (e.g. 'christian home'), age / familial status (e.g. 'no kids'), disability, sexual orientation, or source of income
* the words you choose can cost you - get the facts and avoid being prosecuted under fair housing law
_____
Right now I'm asking for someone charitable to take me in and I really don't want to end up with some right-wing fundamentalist nutjob. It's why I'm moving in the first place. If I don't get out of here, something's going to give.
I think the Fair Housing Act applies 1) only to those selling or renting and 2) only to monetary transactions, but I’m not sure.
Can anyone help here?
I suppose I can be a little more vague if I have to, but I already wrote the ad, which was an emotionally difficult thing to do. I'm too drained to read the full law.
