Update on Minor being hit by Police, Kalamazoo public safety says use-of-force case is
'learning opportunity'

KALAMAZOO -- The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is addressing "training issues" relating to how dangerous suspects are approached following the suspension of Sgt. Jeff VanderWiere in a use-of-force case, said KDPS Chief Jeff Hadley.

"It's a learning opportunity," Hadley said in an interview with Gazette reporters and editors Friday.

The 10-day suspension stems from an April 5 incident in which VanderWiere, 37, struck a handcuffed 16-year-old three times in the face after being spit on.

Hadley said the department is evaluating methods of contacting and covering suspects, approaching shots-fired incidents and approaching armed-person incidents.

1. A more appropriate learning experience would be to handcuff the
cop & drop him off in the juvelie's neighborhood.
