Associated Press) Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.

"OK, what are you doing here?" the officer asked.

"I'm on tour," the singer replied.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

The officers asked Dylan for identification.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan

The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:

"What is your name, sir?" the officer asked.

"Bob Dylan," Dylan said.

1. Oh, gawd, old enough to have outlived your fame
Of course, the years haven't been kind to him (or to many of us), so I doubt I'd recognize him, either. I'd have recognized the name, though.

Still, it had to be a real blow to the ego for the poor guy.

9. Didn't he always like to be left alone? He might be enjoying the anonymity.

kids love him even more than I do and would recognize him in a heartbeat.

30. i doubt that i know a single person that would recognize him just walking down the street.
and even if i did recognize him, i wouldn't care, because i think that most of his music, when performed by him, sucks.

32. Yeah, a lot of people feel that way about him as a performer. You're
not alone there. I have to admit that until about a decade ago I didn't pay that much attention to him, other than a few obvious songs that everybody likes.

Then somebody told me just to read his lyrics as poetry first. I thought that was crazy, since I'm really not into poetry. But they were right. I loved it. After that I could overlook the voice. And after that I began to even like the voice.

26. Neil Young has that same vibe
I think I would know Dylan...maybe...after seeing Young's new video when he was in Wichita a few months ago, I prolly wouldn't have known him until he opened his mouth..The song is a cool story about Young's new LincVolt and the Wichita engineer who built it for him.

I'm surprised as well.

Maybe the locals automatically assume anyone wandering around a low-income minority neighborhood is suspicious?

20. If you're not into the music, just read his lyrics as poetry. Then you'll get it.
And after you turn on to the poetry part the love of the music will follow. Which is not to say that love of his voice will follow. I wish his son Jakob could do the singing for him.

Ranks as the second or third most influential songwriter of the 20th century. Arguably, even the first.

It's not about "appeal", it's about achievement, influence, depth, and scope.

7. This has happened before to Dylan.

A couple years back... think it was in Vegas... hotel security thought he was a homeless person trying to crash.

He never impressed physically and now the ravages of age are adding to the problem. Also he always dressed ever-so-casually.

Wachagonnado.

" Like a complete unknown", indeed.
