Costco CEO supports UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE!
Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 08:52 PM by DoctorMyEyes
Costco isn't Whole Foods, but it's a solidly progressive company. So, if you're boycotting another store - or even if you're not - if there's a Costco near you, I hope you'll give it a try. This interview with Jim Sinegal was published last year.

What's your stand on universal health coverage?

We should have it. I think that in the wealthiest nation in the world, it's a shame and disgrace that we don't. We try to provide a very comprehensive health-care plan for our employees. Costs keep escalating, but we think that's an obligation on our part.

(In the interest of full disclosure - I work for Costco. I'm not an executive or manager and I'm not in marketing. I punch a clock but I love my job and respect my employer.)

Thank you for joining! I hope you love it even half as much as I do! If you're ever not satisfied with a purchase don't hesitate to return it for a full refund. Oh, and if you think you're going to spend more than about $250 a month there on average or are planning a big purchase or two (TV, computer, or something) it's well worth upgrading to an executive membership. Executive members get discounts on stuff like car insurance, rentals, travel, etc, too.

Good on ya - and thanks again! :loveya:

It's far superior to Sams, which we dumped when we found out their political contributions were not anything we wanted a part of. Costco has a great selection of organics that is not found at the competition. I am happy to be a member and plan to spread the word!

I cannot continue to shop at sams since I now know what a right wing loon your CEO is. Not ONE dime of my money will ever go to Sams or walmart, so they can donate it to George Bush or people like him:)

They only called a few more times, and then they stopped calling me :)

15. One of the cool things about Costco
is that it doesn't try to be the "end all be all" shopping experience. Costco doesn't crowd out local businesses - we don't carry enough variety of products to do that. So, while you prefer the farmers' markets and co-ops you can still use Costco to save money on paper goods and toiletries.

I'm glad your wife loves Costco. Thanks so much for signing up!

37. Wages and benefits are already very good, as are prices. Their return policy is second to none...
Costco is the only "big box" store in this area, and they came in 1999. Mr. H and I were rather suspicious of them at first, because of Wal-Mart's bad reputation. But as soon as we did a little investigating we realized they are about as "blue" an employer as you can find anywhere.

Once we toured the warehouse we decided to buy a membership, and we've saved a ton of money on big items like furniture and smaller appliances. (Our major appliances are still clunking along well enough.) I still comparison shop, but Costco wins nearly every time, especially on electronics.

I know of no other vendor that will take your computer back within 6 months no questions asked. The only reason I didn't get my most recent computer from them is that I am a dedicated Mac user and they don't carry Macs. But I really, really wish one of my older friends had gotten her replacement laptop from them, because the hip youngster at the fancy computer store sold her something with stuff she didn't need, couldn't use, and finally practically drove her to tears she was so mad. Mr. H was up half the night more than once trying to get her sorted out -- and could she return the damn thing? Not on your life.

I plan to buy a 40" LCD television in the next 6 months, and Costco is the only place I will plunk down that kind of money. Mr. H and I already had a very informative conversation with one of their young techs, and he clued us in to the brand to avoid -- said he'd seen too many people bring them back. On the other hand he had a lot of info on the differences between plasma and LCD, enough for me to sort out for myself what I want, and enough for Mr. H to chat away quite happily about pixels and whatnot. And if something goes wrong with this miracle of technology? Back it goes.

I could go on, but employees we've talked to are happy with their conditions, and my rigorous comparison shopping tells me that as a customer I am getting a good deal.

You couldn't pay me to shop at Wal-Mart, but I am a happy Costco customer.

Hekate

Darn right Costco isn't Whole Foods...I can actually afford to buy things at Costco!

I go there for the jumbo bags of coffee beans, vitamins, certain produce items, rotisserie chicken, dog food, and their giant tubs of salsa, hummus, tabbouleh, and ranch dressing, just to name a few.
And I always get a latte freeze for just $1.45 at the food court.

Edit to add: The Costco pharmacy is the best, and I won't even bother with Wal-Mart's pharmacy. I know Wal-Mart has certain meds that are rock-bottom priced, but, those are loss-leaders, because WalMart asked about 2 or 3 times the amount for other prescription meds that Costco charged. I know this because I went to WalMart first, per the doctor's suggestion. I had a list of 4 prescription items for my skin ailment. I asked how much each item would be. The antibiotic was about $5, but everything else honestly sounded too expensive, so I decided to try Costco instead. I took the whole list to Costco and saved myself about $20.

52. Yes, he is described in a Time article:
"In an era of CEO pay gone wild, Jim Sinegal is the steal of the century."

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1186981,00.html

In an era of CEO pay gone wild, Jim Sinegal is the steal of the century. The co-founder and chief executive of Costco earns a salary of just $350,000 (plus modest bonus and stock options), richly refuting the boardroom notion that CEOs of billion-dollar corporations require pay packets to match. Costco is one of the U.S.'s largest companies, with 118,800 workers, 473 warehouse-club stores and sales of $51.9 billion in its most recent fiscal year. Costco's stock has trounced archrival Wal-Mart's in recent years. Perhaps most unusual, Sinegal has resisted Wall Street pressure to become a less generous employer; store workers earn an average of $17 an hour and pay just 9% of the cost of health insurance, a rich package in the penny-pinching retail industry. "Our attitude is that if you hire good people and pay them a fair wage, then good things will happen for the company," says Sinegal, who remains hale at 70.

>snip ... A bargain-price boss, discount goods for consumers and workers who can afford the company health plan? What a novel business idea.

I had read a lot about him but he seemed too good to be true. We were not near a Costco until recently. I spoke to some of the employees and asked them if it was true that Jim Sinegal visits his stores and meets with his workers regularly, sometimes working himself in the store. The guy I asked said 'oh yes, he was here a few weeks ago as a matter of fact'. I asked if he was happy working there and he said 'yes, we have a good healthcare policy and even part time workers have coverage'.

This CEO should be seen and heard regularly on TV as he lives the truth that there is not excuse for Corporate greed especially at the expense of workers. If he did not provide so well for his employees he too could be making millions. But in an interview I saw with him a few years ago, he was asked why he took so little, by comparison to other CEOs. He replied that he had provided for his family and that he had all he needed to live a good life and 'what more does anyone need'?

He's a great guy and in the climate of greed we live in, an example of how things could and ought to be.

I don't work for Costgo, and I'm not even a member yet, but I would definitely tell everyone to shop there, not just because of the CEO, but because he provides great service as well as being, as the article says, 'the steal of the century'. Sad statement in some ways, about the rest of our society, but definitely one bright light in an otherwise dismal, corporate/profit driven society.

42. perhaps they should be involved in providing it as this plan takes hold

they are certainly poised to do it in a way that no other company can compete with and make a huge progressive impact on their part of the American landscape as a company woven into the tapestry that is American values. Walmart at one point did this but then ran to China and went from buy American to buy out American. Costco seems to have the means to one-up the Walmart/Sam's Club 'cheapo' feel which Costco does not have. Hope it is something they at least take a good look at. Power in numbers.

If your town tries blocking it for the fascist tentacles of WalMart, then PICKET THE HELL OUT OF CITY HALL.

Costco has been GREAT for my family. Try buying 2lbs of bufalo mozzarella for 7.00 anywhere else. I see 8oz of the exact same mozzarella for 8.00 at regular stores.

49. My best Costco story...
I've been a member for years. We have an Executive Membership, so we get "reward" checks at the end of the year (some tiny percentage of what you've spent during the year as a "thank you"). But the thing is, I shop more online than at the store, even though it's only about four miles away. There are a couple of reasons for this - one, getting there requires traveling a "nightmare" road, and I really hate wandering around the warehouse looking for something I need.

Anyway, some years ago we made a big purchase, we got our check (which can only be spent at the warehouse, not online), and I put it in a "special" place so I wouldn't forget it next time I went. Well, it got covered up, and I forgot about it until I ran across it TWO YEARS LATER. I took it in, fully expecting that they wouldn't honor it, but hey, worth a try, no?

Well. they did. No problem at all.

I love me some Costco! I've been going in person more lately because I switched my dogs to their Kirkland brand dog food. I did this because the rescue I volunteer for provides it for foster dogs, and when I was fostering, I tried my dogs on it and they loved it. And it "rates" better than most foods costing twice as much, and nearly as good as foods costing up to 4 times as much. (See the dog food ratings here: http://www.the-puppy-dog-place.com/dog-food-ratings.html ) Kirkland Signature #40 bags cost about $22.00. Purina ProPlan (not a horrible food, but not as highly-rated as Kirkland) costs about $18.00 for a #20 bag. A popular "dog-food-snob" brand that scores the exact same, Wellness, is $57.00 for a #30 bag (although you can probably get it cheaper on line). And Blue Buffalo, another, slightly less "snobbish" brand that scores the same, is $47.00 for a #30 bag.

Ooops. Didn't mean to turn into a commercial! But seriously, if you have dogs and can get to a Costco (they don't sell it on line, which is why I have to go there), Kirkland Signature is one of the best foods you can feed your dogs, at a price that beats even mediocre dog food.

66. my favorite Costco story
Dave was headed to Costco and asked his wife Becky if she needed anything from there.

She thought for a minute and said "no". He replied "how do you know until you get there?"

I love Costco but always spend more than intended.

84. My wife and I were told the same thing about Kirkland dog food by our trainer.
We were using IAMS and were told unequivocally that Kirkland was better. It's nice to see some rankings to back it up. And the price is great! And our kids love it!

My only problem with Costco is I can never get over calling it "The Price Club" and people don't know what I'm talking about. My family has been members for over 20 years...

50. a worker at Costco told me
that they really liked their CEO. Also he was going on about the hot dogs. The CEO decided they needed bigger hot dogs but they shouldn't charge more for them. this really impressed this worker.

Glad there are rational CEOs in this world. Universal healthcare is the only way.

55. I read somewhere that he only takes 300k a year in salary
still a lot of money, but when asked why he doesn't take multi millions every year he said "who needs more than 300 k a year? I'd rather give it back to the company in the way of employee benefits" (paraphrasing). Our economy would be in great shape if EVERY CEO shared his philosophy!

51. Another long time happy Costco customer here!
I love that they carry organic and natural food products along with everything else. My food Co-op and Costco have been feeding me for years.

If anyone watched Breaking Bad which is made in my home town, Albuquerque, they get all their furniture and stuff for their sets at Costco here too. They even talk about going to buy stuff at Costco on the show.

organic products. If our town had a Trader Joe's too then I'd never go to a Publix again!

57. I have one problem with Costco. They wouldn't sell us a TV.
I was in one in Dallas a few weeks ago. We live 140 miles from Dallas, and 140 miles from Houston. We live in the middle of nowhere. A town of 1200 people with no grocery store.

We wanted to buy a flat screen TV -- ready and willing, money in hot little hand.

They wouldn't deliver. They said "You have to buy it online."

So, they missed a sale of a 48" flat screen TV because they don't deliver. We went to the warehouse to look at the pictures in person. Also the salesgirl said that they all had analog and digital tuners both, but I don't think she really knew what she was talking about.

:wtf:

Costco, PLEASE deliver large items to the boonies!

DoctorMyEyes, please read this.

71. Sorry - it's probably not gonna happen
The whole thing about Costco is that it's a no frills warehouse environment. If you order online, most products are shipped free, but the shipping is built into the selling price. The maximum that Costco marks any product up is 15%. That 15% and membership fees pays all overhead, wages, benefits, shrink, damages etc. I don't see Costco raising prices in order to hire delivery drivers, invest in vehicles, insurance, and everything else such a service would entail.

I myself, who work at Costco and LOVE Costco didn't buy my washer and dryer there because I wanted a delivery person to bring it to me and carry it up two flights of stairs. I paid more, but it was worth it to me. Oh, and they were the exact same model my warehouse stocked! lol

I have a suggestion though - that I've seen many of our members use. They borrow trucks, rent U-Haul or Budget trucks, rent Lowe's trucks by the hour. Some hire haulers or independent delivery people through Craigslist or Classifieds. Of course, the price you'd pay at Costco has to be low enough to warrant the extra expense but apparently it is for some items.

87. I called THREE different movers in Houston and made arrangements.
NONE OF THEM SHOWED UP. This was last Memorial Day.

I don't dare call a mover, after my experience calling alleged movers that don't show up.

I had to call a friend with a pickup that gets us out of jams.

I could get a pickup, but neither I nor my honey is big and strong enough to pick up heavy stuff ourselves.

I'm trying to get my hubby away from Whole Foods so I've been checking for the brands he buys there. Costco has several of them. Even if I can't break him entirely, if I take some money away from WF I'll be doing my part.

74. Costco has the lowest turnover in retail
People tend to stick around because of the good wages and benefits. It saves Costco money on training and it saves members the headache of having to deal with a lot of inexperienced people. If you ask someone what happened to that chili we used to carry a year ago - chances are the person will know what you're talking about and be able to give you a straight answer.

I can't even tell you the number of people I've seen have their lives turned around for the better simply by working at Costco. People who had to live with friends or relatives and drove beater cars if they had a car at all. It does a heart good to see someone go from struggling to get by to making a life for themselves - joining the "middle class". Costco doesn't discriminate against hiring relatives either. Some people have almost made it a "family business".

I had a real "goose-bumpy" moment about a year ago when the economy was really starting to tank and I picked up the Supervisor Newsletter and saw a heading relating to the state of the economy. My first thought was "oh no" like is this going to be one of those "find ways to cut back" memos? Just the opposite.

It was a letter from the vice president advising us to be sensitive to how our employees might be impacted and try to make sure everyone is doing okay. It suggested scheduling people who were suffering due to a family member being out of work for more hours if available. Or to outright hire the family members if we were in a position to do so. I almost cried right then and there. I couldn't be more proud of my company.

68. Costco is AWESOME.
There was an article in the Costco monthly mag a few months ago about how they hadn't raised food court prices in something like 20 years or more, and the reason they gave was that they could still afford to charge that amount. They said it wasn't about charging what the market would bear but about charging a fair markup.

The employees there always seem so happy, too. I'm glad to spend my money with them.

70. CostCo has the best deals on Rx eyewear anywhere. I'm a bit fashionista,
but I've gotten several very sharp frames there for a steal--and the polycarbonate lenses (a requirement for me) are $149.

The deals are even better for kids eyewear; $99 polys for them, they won't sell anything else for kids.

The employees LOVE working there, too.

I love our optical department! I stop by every workday to have my glasses cleaned! LOL Many of the people working in Costco's optical department are earning two to three times as much as at their previous employers - and because there's no commission they'll only sell you what you really want and need. I'm so glad that you're satisfied with the frames! Thanks for being a Costco member! :hi:

73. The Wall Street model
for business says Costco should fail, but contrasted against other companies that followed the Wall Street model Costco is doing quite well.
Because their employees like the work environment the employee turnover is smaller than those businesses that follow the Wall Street model. They don't have to keep training new employees and there's less employee theft as employees don't want to risk losing a good job.
Wall Street needed a major bailout; Costco not so much.

81. Funny you should mention that
I'm in Loss Prevention. Have been in LP for decades and before working for Costco I'd have never dared to dream of a place where there was so little theft. Internal theft, while it does still occasionally occur is still practically non-existent and driven more by an emotional issue than the need/want of more money.

Wall Street advocates a "rape and pillage" model. Jim Sinegal just won't stand for that sort of practice.

83. Thank you so much!
It's great that you're spreading the word. Costco doesn't advertise so people tend to forget about us being an option.

And know what? I work for Costco because it's a socially responsible company. Several years ago I was so disgusted with my employer and got to thinking about the things that I'd always found dis-satisfying with my other former employers and a lot of it was because I didn't respect the company itself. It's leadership, priorities, whatever. Then I purposely sought out employment with Costco - initially taking a pay cut in order to work somewhere that I could believe in. I've never been disappointed and my wages have grown to more than I likely ever would have earned with my other employers.

spent $98.88. Brought my own cloth bags (the big ones you can get at the Shop Rites). Four FULL bags, had to weigh over 50lbs. total. ONLY groceries.

Fuck Whole Foods, been a member for 13 years at Costco, it's only 15 minutes away, and I wonder why I haven't shopped there more often. I guess the aura I though was part of Whole Foods has permanently worn off.
