This morning on CNN there was a story about a person in Dallas County, TX, who, after many years in prison (do not remember how many) for raping a boy, was released thanks to the innocence project, based on DNA. Dallas County, apparently, has the highest number of cases exonerated.
And, apparently, one of the Duke students commented about realizing how many innocent people are sent to jail - people who could not afford the best legal team available in North Carolina.
No doubt, the innocence project can handle only that many cases, and, only where DNA can determine the outcome. I think that in Duke it was more than DNA evidence.
And yet, one has to wonder if the DA had chosen not to proceed, whether cries about racial bias were lobbed against him: a white DA siding with white rich kids against a black working woman..
The state AG specifically mentioned Nifong botching the investigation.
Last, I do hope that this case will not deter other women from pressing charges when they are assaulted, even when they are strippers, or intoxicated.
