USGov MRE Menu #22 (Jambalaya) WARNING: GLASS IN JAMBALAYA!
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 12:16 AM by DemoTex
I just chomped down on a mouthful of glass from my first bite. I spit out broken glass and blood. I taped glass to the outside of the MRE bag and saved the rest of the entree. This MRE is packaged by Ameriqual Packaging, same company that has the salmonella tainted milkshake powder out there.

This will go to the top tomorrow. I'll see to that. But if you know any one eating US GOV MREs (military, USFS, BLM, etc) pass this warning to them. I stand behind the warning 100%.

3. These MREs are killing me!
Fortunately I have peroxide in my med kit. I did a peroxide rinse followed by a salt water swoosh. What else can you do with a tongue wound from a MRE in the wilderness?

4. You got gauze? If you do, you can do
direct pressure, and if it keeps bleeding you may need sutures... which means... call the local EMTs with the unit they might be able to do it. Some remote service medics are trained in the necessary skills.

Tomorrow you can expect it to swell as well. You got instant ice? Icepack? That will help to stop bleeding and reduce the swelling, and I do hope you are not taking any blood thinners, as that will make it a little harder to stop.

Oh and salty water is a classic remedy that works... good on you.

(Mods I know we are not supposed to give medical advise, but... he is in the wilderness)

7. It is not a laceration, just a small bleeding tear.
I'm OK, just need a good lawyer! The salt water stopped the bleeding. But I am really pissed off. Not for myself, but for those who trust these meals.

10. La Brea Fire is in the wilderness out Santa Maria way. 25,724 acres so far...
http://www.countyofsb.org/ceo/fire.aspx

The good news is it's well into the forest back country. The bad part is there's 50 years of fuel out there and it's inaccessible. Smoke can be seen throughout the county, and just before sunset the sun was bright red.

Much more info at the link.

Hekate

"A fire is currently burning in a remote area of the Los Padres National Forest in the San Rafael Wilderness area, about 25 miles east of Santa Maria and 16 miles west of New Cuyama, south of Highway 166. Currently, Highway 166 remains open, but motorists are urged to use caution if traveling through the area. Smoke from the La Brea Fire may be visible throughout most of Santa Barbara County.
For updated maps and more information go online to Inciweb at http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1803 or contact the Los Padres National Forest Fire Information Center: (805) 961-5770 (6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.)."

"Effective at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 11, 2009, an Evacuation Order was issued by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office for the following areas due to fire activity of the La Brea Fire:
• Western Boundary: Sierra Madre Road
• Southern Boundary: Cottonwood Road
• Eastern Boundary: Highway 166
• Northern Boundary: Spoor Canyon
This area includes Moon and Eckert Canyons.
The new mandatory Order replaces the previous Evacuation Warning for the same area issued earlier today. In addition. the Evacuation Warning area is now moved to include areas bounded by Cottonwood Road and Wasioja Road, between Highway 166 and Sierra Madre Road. "

12. Wow, that pisses me off. We depended heavily on MREs following Katrina.
Relief groups fell back to giving out any available MREs on top of canned food and whatever else they could get their hands on. I wasn't part of that though. I spent my time with the red cross finding survivors and recovering bodies. I can't imagine how much higher the rage would've gone if survivors suffered further injury because of glass in MREs after the state and federal government failed to respond.

21. Same here, even had the jambalaya
Most of the general population isn't exposed to the MRE's, but in a disaster people depend on them. We need to remember this and post warnings if there's a major hurricane this year.

19. I remember some of the MREs we used to eat back in the 90s
Some of that stuff, like Omelet or Potatoes Au Gratin, was pretty damned nasty. I hear the selections have gotten better over the years.

Sucks about what happened to you though. I remember people in the military used to always joke about stuff coming from the lowest bidder, you never knew what quality you were getting.

22. That's a shame
The Jambalaya is one of the best MRE meals. I know, I've eaten many of the in Afghanistan and other lovely places around the globe. Hoep your mouth survives and best of luck with the fires....
