What if the US government refused to provide surgery or cancer treatments because someone forgot to mention their acne treatments?
What if the US government was able to randomly send your premiums through the roof or drop your coverage entirely when your child had the nerve to become sick and require health care?
What if the US government started billing you twice as much for the same procedures you had a few years ago?
What if the US government raised your health care premiums (taxes) by 100 percent in a two year span?
What if the US government decided randomly that the specialist you needed to see didn't fall under their plans and charged you the full amount?
What if the US government profiled you as a 'high-risk' customer and either denied you coverage altogether or made you pay through the nose, even though you needed the coverage more than most.
What if the people in the US government who refused to provide coverage for numerous customers for technicalities all got promoted for a job well done?
What if the people in charge of the US government health care plan gave themselves eight-figure salaries while people died waiting for access to treatments in a maze of paperwork?
You better believe there would be pitchforks and torches as far as the eye could see railing against this system. And plenty of radio and TV talk shows driving home the point that government bureaucrats are good for nothing.
And yet all this stuff happens now with the system we have, except the insurance companies are the ones behind all of it. They rake in the profit hand over fist, and they don't do it by providing great coverage. They do it by charging more and providing less. We the people just play insurance roulette, hoping the wheel lands on 'covered' when we get sick.
It's sad to think that the only part of this system that riles some people up is the thought of changing it. After all, when you take an honest look at the way health care is handled in the private sector, it's hard to make government-run health care seem scary.
