Orrin Hatch just admitted, on the Senate floor, the repukes are going to LOSE in '08.
He was arguing on behalf of the embryonic stem cell research and at the end of his speech, he said..."Vote for stem cell research TODAY! I hope we have the 67 votes now because eventually we WILL have those votes and why should we put this off for 2 years when the votes will be there."

 He just admitted...THEY ARE GOING TO LOSE BIG IN '08!

1. Reverse Psychology.
Maybe I'm paranoid in a scenario that has consistently defied logic, but there is a difference between real life and a game.

5. Possible.
But the Democrats have a major advantage in 2008. That is of course is that the GOP F***** up BIGTIME! This is much worse than what happened to Carter in 1980. But remember, Carter did not make the problem, he just got a problem thrown at him and handled it poorly. In this case, the Republicans made massive problems and cannot and will not fix them.

2. I look forward to Hatch retiring...
And to his fufilling his dream of working in a NYC S&M club, in his last years.

As one old saw in DC goes: Why do you think they call him "The Master"?

8. The GOP and their mediaminions will be...
screaming from the rooftops to change the filibuster/debate rules back to the pre-1964 2/5ths rule. It used to be that you needed 40%(40) votes to keep the debate open. The GOP did not have enough seats so they cried and demanded the rules be changed. The Democrats foolishly gave in. They better not do it this time!

15. Aha--now I get it (regarding the dual vote you mentioned in the other thread).
Either way, the research continues, but S30 imposes severe restrictions on it.

Gotta hand it to Hatch on my pettest issue, he wants it as much as I do. At least he's got the leadership to make the moderate Rs fall in line.

Just read that S5 passed 64-36. It's gonna get real messy when it goes to W and comes up for an override. Brace yourself.

16. S30 just passed with 70 votes....can't be vetoed.
I hope there's a HUGE outcry when that SOB vetoes it. We only need 3 MORE VOTES for a win. The MAJORITY of citizens SUPPORT stem cell research! Once again, he will be ignoring what WE want.

17. S30 is bad law, I'm afraid; even more restrictive on blastocyst research than we have NOW.
They introduced it on purpose--to make the re-elected RRRs appear to be in favor of SCR. S5 is the bill we need.

From StemPAC:

More than 5 long years into President Bush's short-sighted, cruel policy restricting stem cell research, America once again has the chance to reverse it -- and strike a blow for hope.

Several weeks ago, the House of Representatives passed a bill to overturn President Bush's restrictions. The Senate is expected to vote on this bill, Senate Bill 5, within days.

Although stem cell research has bipartisan support, "pro-death" activists are working hard to torpedo this bill, and take hope away from millions of Americans. Some Senators have even put up another bill, S 30, called the "The Hope Offered through Principled, Ethically-Sound Stem Cell Research Act." The problem is -- it actually imposes additional restrictions on stem cell research. In short, it's a crock. But some senators apparently think their constituents are so stupid that they'll fall for a warm fuzzy title. In short, they think you're a moron.

Senate Bill 5 is the real deal. Senate Bill 5 is the stem cell bill supported by doctors, researchers, and patient advocates across the nation. Please write your Senators today. Tell them to support Senate Bill 5. And tell them -- you are not a moron.

12. My jaw fell when I heard that.
I was expecting him to say that MAYBE they would have a shot at political survival if Republics support the stem cell bill. But he seems to think their losing is a done deal.
