Clinton calls for release of democracy icon Suu Kyi
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Myanmar Tuesday to release Aung San Suu Kyi after the Nobel peace laureate was sentenced to another 18 months of house arrest.

Clinton, on a visit to war-ravaged eastern Democratic Republic of Congo designed to focus on mass rape and violence against women, turned her attention briefly to the plight of the world's most prominent woman prisoner.

"She should not have been tried and she should not have been convicted," Clinton told reporters. "We continue to call for a release from her continuing house arrest."
