Barack Obama is not even NEARLY as leftist as I am and the Right Wingers are calling him "socialist"
Which means the law of averages should plop him down right smack in the middle of a generalized political spectrum.

However, the difference is that I would NEVER classify him as anything other than what he is, which is a CENTRIST.

I'm totally cool with that, because that's where most of the country is, and that's the idealism that he's seeking to serve.

One has to be pragmatic about this, right?

But you know, when I hear the other side refusing to see where Mr. Obama actually stands and repeatedly seek to project every fear and hatred that they own upon him, especially when they can go from communist to Nazi in a single breath, it's clear to me that there is a whole lot more behind their bombastic rhetoric.

The fact that their side is the home of just about all the racist bastards in country is a fact that has not escaped my notice.

I don't doubt another name for a black man in this country has the tendency to pass their lips when they are in familiar company.

1. Obama's close to Reagan on the political spectrum
Or Hoover.

No, I'm not joking.

2. I am very much to the left myself.
I actually thought about this once, but then told myself I was an idiot and that I was wrong about Obama being in the middle of the spectrum.

3. But, keep in mind -
they have a pretty good idea of who the Nazis were, but, beyond killing Jews and queers, the philosophy behind the Nazi gang escapes them.

And they don't know what fascism is.

Nor socialism.

Nor communism.

They don't know very much, which is why it's always fun to ask them questions.

But, they do know that word, oh, yes, it trips very easily off their lips, I agree with you.......................................

6. You got it, Scorpio.
"Socialist" is a vague enough term (for them; it means something like "he wants to take away my freedoms") that they can throw it around pretty freely, but what they really mean is that he's that other name. They're 'way to chicken-shit to use it, but that's for sure what they mean.

Oh, but before you go, tell me how you like your clean water and generally safe food?

And when you drive your car, how are those federally mandated safety standards working for you as you drive on a public road?

Step off, motherfucker.

23. We should be so lucky to get a bit more socialism around here!
We won't and I think that might be too bad. Instead we get the Capitalist Corporate Pigs feeding at their own special Welfare Trough that has fancy names like TARP. And then they'll tell you that your health care insurance is just fine because after all, you're just a prole and quite expendable. You want a fucking Death Panel - check into Premera or United Health or Cigna. They all have them - it's called their profit margin.

Stick around and learn a little bit. You might find out that we're the ones who can help you, not the fat cats who want you to think you're going to eventually be one of them when you never, ever are. They know that and it's high time you find out.

Or you can just spout their canned crap and earn yourself a pizza.

9. On many issues, he's center right- more or less a Rockefeller Republican
Of course, most Republicans these days are even farther off the deep end than Goldwater was in 1964- and the have the corporate media firmly behind them.

10. I said he was a bit too "status quo" for my tastes
and just naive enough to think he could work with Republicans and get anything done.

That was during the primaries. I've always known he isn't even as "left" as I am.

He's getting both barrels from the Republican shit machine now... wonder if he still thinks he can work with them. I have a feeling that naivete is vanishing faster than a buffet with Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh in attendance.

Or, at least, that was the implication.

Didn't quite work out as he'd hoped, that's for sure.

11. He's a right-wing corporatist
Obama might be a moderate on certain social issues like abortion and gay rights, but on the big economic issues, foreign policy, healthcare, etc. he is solidly to the right. that's not really a smear against Obama, it's just how 95% of the democrats generally are and have always been.

14. Obama is center or center left on many issues. Which makes the crazies even more laughable.
Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 12:04 AM by Jennicut
Its such stupid hyperbole to the rest of us. In fact, during the campaign his ideas were very moderate.

The truth of the matter is the Dems here in the US would be to the right in other countries. However, for the crazy RWers I guess simple reforms and an ever so slight move to the left has them up in arms. Like I said, utterly laughable. Fascist, communist, socialist....Obama is none of these. He is not even a Social Democrat. I would say he is in between the Social Dems and the Third Way types, a little more to the left then Clinton but not by much. How do these idiots not get that?

They are foaming at the mouth in part because he's a democrat, but mostly because he's a black man, occupying the Oval Office.

They sicken me, they really do.

18. They do it because they can do it with impunity
It's what they've always done, and gotten away with it for 30 years, with our split-the-difference-for-troof media.

Carter was a conservative Democrat, a Born Again, strong military, deregulation advocate. Now, he's the guy COMINTERN snuck into the White House. Clinton, DLC chairman, good ol' boy horsetrading southern governor. He hadn't even taken office before he was unmasked as a Trotskiite.

Today, Lou Dobbs was calling Dean a "bloodsucking liberal" proponent of "liberal fascism." Dean, the ex-DLCer, a moderate by any measure.

The correct fucking answer when liberal-socialist-leftist-whatever is thrown at you as an epithet is, "Goddamn right I'm a liberal. FUCK YOU!" I have no idea why liberal Dems just can't get that into their heads. Cowering and simpering has never worked and has only made things worse for everybody.

(To Howard Dean's credit, he never dodged the "liberal" label, a rare exception)

22. You are correct
And it's prefaced by uppity.

I cannot believe the racism is getting so out in the open. I hope that is part of the eventual healing process because in the meantime it is damn disgusting. No one has directly used the word in front of me, but they will here the same thing my grandfather did 35 years ago.

During part of my childhood, I was raised by my southern grandparents. They were salt of the earth, good people, but my grandfather in his younger years had belonged to the KKK. Then he spent so many years working with blacks on Amtrak that it just didn't make sense to him anymore. However, one time he was angry at a neighbor and called him a n****r. I was 12 at the time and I told him that he was never, ever to use that word in front of me. EVER. And he never again did. Heck, I'm not sure it ever came out of his mouth again.
