N.Y.

A nuclear reactor at the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan was automatically shut down Monday night due to an electrical disturbance. Plant officials said the problem started around 8:30 p.m. in an electrical switchyard on Broadway, across the street from the plant. A nearby lightning strike may have caused the hitch at the Con Edison switchyard. The plant generator and reactor Unit 3 shut down as designed with no damage. Plant officials said there was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of workers or the public. Unit 3 is expected to be back online within the week. Indian Point's other active reactor, Unit 2, is currently operating at 100 percent. When both reactors are working, they generate about 2,000 megawatts of power for customers in New York City and Westchester County. )

Situation Update No. 1
On 11.08.2009 at 03:13 GMT+2

Japan's Chubu Electric Power Co (9502.T) halted operations at its sole Hamaoka nuclear plant in Shizuoka prefecture after a strong quake, the trade ministry said on Tuesday. The two reactors -- the 1,137 megawatt No.4 and the 1,267 MW No.5 units -- shut down automatically after quake with an initial 6.6 magnitude, the ministry said. "The two running reactors have automatically shut down. There are no reports of damage to our facility at this point," said a Chubu Electric Power spokesman, adding the company was carrying out inspections to get more detailed information and was still unsure how long the shutdown would last. "There is also no report of a radiation leak," he added. The ministry said that an alarm for high radioactivity had gone off inside the No.5 unit, but that there was no radioactive impact on the outside environment. There were also no reports of fire at the plant after the quake, the ministry added. Kyodo News cited Chubu Electric saying 9,100 households were without electricity following the earthquake. The spokesman said the company had enough capacity to meet the peak electricity demand forecast for this summer, but added that in the worst case scenario, it would ask other utilities for help if it has difficulty meeting demand. The trade ministry said Chubu's power demand had fallen by about 200 megawatts after the quake due in part to power loss at some districts it serves.

1. Working just like they're supposed - nice and safe, shutting down when they need to.
Good to hear!

2. SOP for Mr. Ensho
If a high pressure alarm goes off on a water line in no way connected to the reactor, it becomes a "nuke event."

8. Sounds like the system works well!
Unfortunately it won't be enough to pacify the Birther-like willfully ignorant OMGNUKES crowd we have around here.

4. Thank you for your continuing series...
showing how well the multiply redundant safety systems function at nuclear generating facilities.

Hmmm, I'm starting to get hungry. I hope nothing awful happens at my "food event", AKA lunch.

7. "shut down as designed with no damage"
in related news my alarm clock operated as designed and woke me up despite a power outage.

9. I have some friends and family who live close...
to Indian Point, in Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

Glad to know that the safety mechanisms work as designed.
And honestly, if I lived in that area I'd be more afraid of a prison break at Sing-Sing than a "nuke event" at IPEC.

12. Just so you can try to fan the flames with yet more non-events.
You should have used the name amnesty to change yours to Chicken Little.

Do you know what would cause a real nuclear disaster? People like you getting what you want. If you and your ilk achieve your goal of putting an end to nuclear power generation, then every single non-government operator will simply lock the doors and walk away, leaving the cost of decommissioning to the public.

Already anti-nuclear activists have partialy brought this about. A major reason the decommissioning fund is not up to the task, is that older plants are being run beyond their "use by date" at ever increasing costs and not being replaced. Replaced with newer, even safer and more efficient designs, part of the income from which would go towards paying for the decommissioning the reactors they replace.

There is no going back. Only forward. However, oposition has resulted in stagnation and the continued use of nuclear reactors that are decades old and often based on designs that are decades older still. One almost has to wonder if opponents of nuclear power are so determined to have their way, that they want a disaster or major incident to occur in order to further their cause with a pointed finger and smug "We told you so."

16. Advocate. Big, big difference.
I read up on the matter, pro and con, and reached my own conclusion.

And a big part of my decision to continue to support the expansion of nuclear power generation comes from the simple fact that it is as obvious as the nose in the middle of your face that the vast majority of the anti crowd has not even tried to familiarise themselves with the science involved, and that of the few who have, the majority distort the truth beyond all recognition or plain outright lie through their teeth.
