*ahem*
Let's take a moment, you and I, to slice through the shouting and the posturing and the politics. Let's elbow out some space, just a wee margin, away from fired US Attorneys and Gonzales and subpoenas and Karl Rove, away from Cheney and Bush and spending bills and withdrawal plans, away from Imus and Duke lacrosse and all the rest of it. Let's put a little room between these things and ourselves, not because these things are unimportant, but because something underneath it all still manages to get ignored even within the maelstrom of a failing administration, and we need to talk about it.

A soldier from Massachusetts was killed in Iraq last week. He was an Army Sergeant, and was 25 years old.

A soldier from New Mexico was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Specialist, and was 21 years old.

A soldier from Alabama was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Staff Sergeant, and was 31 years old.

A soldier from Indiana was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Private, and was 20 years old.

A soldier from California was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Staff Sergeant, and was 25 years old.

A soldier from New Hampshire was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Captain, and was 25 years old.

A soldier from North Carolina was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Specialist, and was 33 years old.

A soldier from Michigan was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Specialist, and was 23 years old.

A soldier from Arkansas was killed in Iraq last week. He was a Private, and was 21 years old.

Nine soldiers, whose names I am withholding out of respect for their families, are gone. Nine soldiers gone in less than a week, nine names added to the bloody list, a list that totals 45 soldiers killed in Iraq over the short passage of twelve days in April. 45 soldiers killed in less than two weeks, added to the 81 soldiers lost in March, added to the 80 soldiers lost in February, added to the 3,292 lost since Bush's wretched misadventure in Iraq began four long years ago.

This is the "surge" you've heard about, three months along now, and that smothering euphemism is brutally appropriate. Critics tried to label this newest fiasco an "escalation" in the media when it began, so the truth of it wouldn't be buried under kinder, gentler, politically soothing terminology. Yet "surge" is the word, and the lethality of it all is only lost when we fail to take a moment to encompass it.

Bush and his people have "surged" about 200 American soldiers into the cold ground over this new year, have "surged" about 200 folded American flags into the trembling hands of shattered families, have "surged" woe and horror and sorrow into the hearts and souls of people from all points on the national compass. They have not "surged" any kind of success into the Iraq equation, of course, but this becomes mere grist for the political mill only when the rest of us fail to take a moment and remember that failed policies these days are always paid for in blood.

45 soldiers in 12 days. Will it be 90 soldiers in 24 days? One hundred soldiers when the time comes to turn the calendar page? More?

Who can say? The only constant is butchery, and as we slide along this axis of inevitable carnage day after day, we can depend upon a daily dose of death to present itself before us. We can, and must, engage in the political fights of this hour. We must demand accountability, push for hearings and subpoenas, and work to corner this deranged administration so that maybe, just maybe, a chance to stop the killing can be seized.

Take this moment, just a small slice of time, for death. In all the noise and thunder and shouting, don't forget to take that small moment. It is the very least we, the living, can do.

2. Watching the Leher (or whatever) New Reports on PBS will
break your heart. I think it was Monday (maybe it was Sunday, who knows) that they ran the names and photos of 13 kids who died last week. I know, I know, they aren't kids. One was a whole 27 friggin' years old.

But you know what? When I was 27, I was still a kid. I had a lot of things to learn, I had a lot of things to do.

These poor children have their chance to learn, live, and love stolen from them by some very very evil greedy thugs.

3. Escalation is the proper word.
If any of us believe or buy into any term or argument used by this cabal after everything that's happened since we invaded, we deserve what we get. Of course the death toll has increased and will continue to. But thanks for calling attention to it. I know that, coming from you, it will receive at least a tiny fraction of the attention that Imus and ANS get here on DU.:)

4. Yup... and for those "addicted" to the less critically important....
How about we let Jon Stewart have the last word... (as usual, he gets to the heart of the matter in his uniquely hilarious way):

7. But Will, do you know how many Americans really don't care? I'm surrounded by those who aren't
touched by Bush's Folly, who say, "A couple of thousand." when asked do you know how many troops have died in this mess? Or I get, "They were all volunteers. What's your problem?" They're all busy. Busy with their families, busy with keeping their jobs. Busy being entertained by their 42" plasma TVs.

I check the Iraq Causalities site every day. I'm shocked by how the numbers have risen and how few people know or care.

I had to clear my throat, too, after reading that piece, Will. Wonderful, as always, and thank you for it.

I came in to DU because I just read "Breaking News" on MSN that all active duty Army tours in Iraq are being extended from 12 mos. to 15 mos. Sickening, heartbreaking, disgusting, wrong -- pick one or all of the above. The senseless killing continues.

There will be a space in their lives forever thanks to the * crime family.

I have 3 kids and I never take this news lightly no matter what's on the news. Thanks for highlighting it.

12. Also remember for every soldier who dies there a 4 to 5 seriously wounded.
I remember in the early 1960's seeing gas casualties from World War 1 in VA hospitals. Living to deal with a lifetime of Halliburton proxy managed care in the VA hospitals is a living death.

Let's please remember them. The other half of this evil equation.

Death is the reality of war. The ultimate reality. The final conclusion of everything.

16. Well we knew this would happen too
not that there is anything good about that either.

Every time I hear "the White House says..." from a talking head I just want to scream "GET A GOOD SOURCE!" so I have stopped watching the news. It is useless. Not that that is new I just can't watch this abnormal exhibition anymore-there is more truth in a "Deal or No Deal" "Thank God you are here" two hour pretend TV fest than anything that I see on "the news"

17. As Long As 35 Million People Continue to Support the Bush Cabal
And those 35 million control the news we read, the radio programs we are inundated with, and the framing of issues, each and every one of those soldiers will have died in vain.

And you, Will, will be painted as being anti-American, anti-troop, and anti-"victory" (whatever the hell THAT is supposed to mean).

The lunatics run the asylum.

18. Nominated.
One of the things I thought of when I watched the ladies from the Rutgers basketball team was, "What nice young people. They didn't deserve that type of stuff. Their lives are supposed to be opening up all the good potential that this country holds." It is not lost on me that they are the same age as the soldiers that this country is sending to Iraq.

20. There is much more than nine soldiers
According to this site:
http://icasualties.org/oif/IraqiDeaths.aspx

Yesterday - 38 Iraqis were killed or found dead. On Monday it was 40, on Sunday 38 on Saturday 59, and on Friday 52, etc.

If the killing is going to stop, then it is the people doing this killing who need to stop what they are doing. We let this cat out of the bag, or opened this Pandora's box of violence, but it should be closed up or contained before we just pick up and go home.

22. Yes, and now they've all had their tours extended to 15 months...
instead of a year - that's everyone that's there now and any new going over. No link, but I heard Gates say it himself on MSNBC, in between the usual trivia that passes for news and the Duke Lacrosse story, which is of interest to me since it's in my state. I was proud of my Attorney General Cooper, I thought he handled himself well in the news conference.

25. It is a surge - in the river of blood pouring out of our country and out of Iraq
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 04:00 PM by ItsTheMediaStupid
Surge - verb

Definition: Temporary increase in the rate of flow.

Example: Blood was being shed in Iraq, but not fast enough for BushCo, so a surge was ordered, to turn their rivers red more quickly.

A man of character does not ask a single soldier to die for a failed policy. - Lee Iacocca

29. The administration's war of profit is worse than mere error. It's malfeasance,....
,...and human evil of the highest order.

Now, this cabal of horror seeks a Czar of WAR. A CZAR OF WAR!!!!

They are blood-letting robbers of the worst kind,...the absolute most human evil, right there/here before our very eyes.

I just can not understand why this blind oppression is allowed to continue. I thought we lived in a CIVILization.

*shaking head* I don't understand why this is happening.

43. Correcting the record
The United States is not the oppressor of Islam's people.

Imperialism is extracting the resources of an indigenous people, stripping them of access to those resources, and keeping the goods for yourself exclusively. We don't fit that definition.

The members of the Naval community to which I belong and call family are not gangsters and do not fit your mischaracterization of their profession.

And, any economics professor will tell you that capitalism has afforded a higher standard of living across the globe than any other single factor. Capitalism improves lives. Who here is willing to abandon it personally, or the resources it provides to states whose leadership denies its oppressed any advancement?

51. Not quite the right definition of Imperialism
You write "Imperialism is extracting the resources of an indigenous people, stripping them of access to those resources, and keeping the goods for yourself exclusively."

Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. It is not the exclusive use of resources which can be raw materials or cheap labor. Imperialism can violate freedoms and abuse human rights. It is 1 country, empire, nation, ruling another. I would add occupying in there also. So far this sounds like the bushites are trying to do in Iraq.

Capitalism improves SOME lives, true, but, as in Imperialism, the have-nots get less and their lives are not improved.

As far as the bit about your days being welcomed here, responded to by asking whyyour "factual measured statements" are cause for dismissal, I suggest you read the rules of DU. Here is a link (found at the bottom of each page)http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html

Again, welcome to DU and may your time here be spent productively, discussing, reading, perhaps even learning or expanding yourself as happens to many of us.

right back atcha.

There was nothing in my post that was in any way offensive. Pitt's response no doubt was given it seems that once again his Disulfiram has worn off. Seriously Pitt it's time to get some professional help.

There was no need to remove my post at all except that contradiction makes Pitt foam at the mouth even more than usual and presumably the mods just can't be fucked dealing with his personality disorder

DU is a fucking toilet if one can't point out the utter arrogance of a wailing post moaning about the lives lost by the INVADING AND OCCUPYING force.

If a politely worded contradictory post is verboten because it upsets the resident bilious ranter, then I'll quite happilly be tombstoned - adios
