Trevor was born to Angela and Bob Kott in Sacramento on October 14, 2006. He is a remarkably happy baby, but…

Trevor is fighting to survive.

He was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia at birth and must have a bone marrow transplant, but there is no match for Trevor in the International Bone Marrow Registry.

Trevor’s need is urgent.

On March 15, 2007 doctors gave Trevor only about 6-8 weeks to live unless a match can be found. His life depends on finding a match immediately.

This lack of matching donors is a crisis that affects thousands of families every year. It only takes one match to save a life. It could be you, and it is so easy to find out if you do match.

It does not require a blood or marrow sample, simply a swab of some cells from your cheek, and the compassion to help save a life. 51. The Bone Marrow Registry technically charges for everyone. But there are programs to cover the cost

for under-represented races and mixed-raced individuals.

Which means, it's free to just about everyone who isn't caucasian. 75% of the data base is caucasian. 25% is not. Of that 25% only 2% are of mixed race.

118. I tried to register and give a sample (long ago) but could not afford the fee

I was so poor at the time, there was no way I could do it. The thing that I thought was reprehensible on the organization's part was the fact that my sister was an almost match and that's why I contacted them to give the sample. I explained the situation to them so they could find a way to bypass the fee (My sister was close, maybe I'm closer? Could you make an exception for this case?) but it was like I might as well have been talking to a bank teller.

I don't mean to dis the program (it was so long ago I don't even remember it's specific name) because what they're doing is vital for sick people, but I just couldn't understand the decision that a fee is more important than a higher-than-average chance for a match.

And, even though I'm not as broke as I used to be, I still can't afford to be tested.

I hope Trevor finds what he needs.

One of the barriers for Trevor is that people have to pay to get swabbed. They've not found a way around that. BTW Trevor is of strong Italian descent.

50. Trevor is a crossover tissue type. Which is VERY interesting from a evolutionary perspective.

Trevor has a rare tissue type -- called a crossover tissue type.

I am not a doctor or a geneticist, but this is how it was explained to Trevor's Dad by the docs at Stanford. Through evolution, some people born with genetic mutations or a 'cross-over' to a change in the gene pool. This helps the the species survive. For example, if there was a plague, Trevor would probably live because he's genetically just a little different than the rest of us.

There are other people with this kind of typing. And they are often very healthy. Trevor's tissue type is probably one of the reasons he's been able to fight off the cancer for 6 months. Doctor's sent him home to die when he was diagnosed. But he started thriving -- so they started treating him. He is still doing well. He is a happy smiling baby.

His tissue type has nothing to do with the leukemia.

So if you know one of those people who never gets a cold or the flu -- ask them to get swabbed. For Trevor.

I haven't had a cold in years (now, I got strep this winter because my resistance was so low due to my pregnancy, but I haven't had a cold in eight years and I've never had the flu OR a flu shot).

terribly sad and unfortunate that no match was found in the registry. I wish I could wave a magic wand and either be a match for him or find a perfect match. I wish there was more I could do for him and his parents. Cancer and leukemia are always tragic, but to get it at birth and possibly die so soon after birth is unspeakably so.

I just went to the family's blog site and was so moved by the pictures of this little boy and his family...

I am embarressed to say that while I am listed as an organ donor in the event of some tragic accident and my untimely death, that I'm not registered in the national marrow donor database. It seems like it would be such a basic thing to do, and I never have.

I consider the two greatest things I've ever done is to give life to my two beautiful and healthy children. If I could be the match to Trevor or anyone else out there and save their life, I would feel that to also be a great thing to do.

I am out of town right now, but will be back this weekend (I'm actually out of the country). I checked and there is a donor drive in Petaluma (not too far from my area) where I can get swabbed on Sunday. I also will put up a poster at our local town post office where everyone picks up their mail.

I realize that $52 may be hard for people to come up with. What a shame if "the one" couldn't get swabbed because of finances. But I went to the website for these donor programs, and it looks like if someone is willing to donate but can't afford it, that they do offer help. I urge every DUer to donate and if you can't afford the $52, then to see about getting the costs covered. Someone here may be a match.

Yesterday there was a large drive to help find a match for Trevor.

Vitaly Potapenko, center-forward for the Sacramento KIngs was there.

Touched by Trevor’s will to survive, Joe and Gavin Maloof owners of the Kings donated funds to support his family’s effort to recruit more donors to the NMDP Registry

Complete gratitude is what comes to my mind – how can we ever put into words what yesterday was like. It was so amazing on so many levels. Every step of this journey we are on I get more convinced there’s a higher power taking over – I mean, I’ve always believed in the “higher power”, but I am living in a miracle right now. I guess I feel like I am playing a small part in the miracle of Trevor. I know people have said to me how “strong” we are, how “amazing” we are, well, all I can say to that is that I am strong because Trevor is strong, because my friends and family are strong, and because our community is amazing. The feeling inside of that elementary school gym lifted me in ways I just cannot describe. Every person who was there wanted to be there, was there because they cared and they wanted to make a difference. My friends, neighbors and family worked tirelessly ALL day, from 7 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon; people stood in line and waited patiently in the cold rain with their small children to get swabbed; businesses donated food and pictures and other things I’m sure I’m not even aware of; and BloodSource has been working long, extra hours day after day to find Trevor a match. I know there are SO MANY people I need to thank on an individual basis, but I must thank Kathy Gerstle , her family, and “Team Trevor” for organizing and putting together this most incredible day. I know that lives will be saved because of your efforts and the efforts of each individual coming and getting swabbed. I also have to thank the “clown” who “behind the scenes” watched over the children ALL DAY, kept them entertained, doing face painting, collecting donations, and the countless other things she has been doing leading up to the drive. Now, that’s a strong woman who can handle all those kids all day long!!! (Aracelly too!). I could go on and on thanking people, but I don’t want to be like the Oscars and bore you all – please, please, please, just know that we are in complete gratitude.

So I went and saw Trevor after the drive. He’s feeling the chemo a bit now. He gave me this big smile when I walked into the room, then after holding him for five minutes he fell asleep in my arms. There’s just nothing like a cuddly, sweet, sleeping babe. Bob came later and stayed with him last night. The girls woke up with face paint all over their bodies – they had such a great time yesterday. I’m still not sure what the plan is for today, who is going to be with Trevor.

I had sort of a dream last night about surfing – it was very strange, like what kind of day are we going to have – is it going to be calm, no waves, just a day of “laying on the beach” – or is surf going to be up and we’re going to be trying to catch a wave, never quite getting the timing right – or are we going to catch some and lose a few, having a normal day of ups and downs – or is there going to be that one, huge, scary wave that we catch and it crashes down so hard it knocks the wind out of us and puts us through the ringer – or are we going to catch the biggest wave yet and ride it all the way into the calm of a phone call from Stanford saying we’ve found our match. But nothing will be like the day of riding Mavricks – the day we hear the words, “Trevor is cured”.

Got called once, as a potential match, but after further testing I was disappointed to find I was not a perfect match. I plug the marrow registry every chance I get with friends, family, acquaintances. Now that they can get you registered with the swab, it's SO easy. I went to Trevor's website yesterday from there I tried to find a place to donate and I ultimately donated through blood source as a gift in tribute of Trevor.

Having read the OP again, now, I realize there was a special place to donate to Trevor to support your biking effort. I feel bad I didn't donate to that instead. It was only $20.00 but I hope you can count that towards you're effort on some some level.

I wonder if other people have done the same thing and you may be raising more money than you've realized. I hope so.
