Anybody ever have their cable box freeze?
After watching my taping Colbert and The Daily Show, I tried to change channels and my box was totally unresponsive to the remove and to me pressing the buttons on the face.

About five-ten minutes later, it turns itself off, turnes off the outlet in the back that my VCR is plugged into (That I've set to 'unswitched', btw), then turns itself back on after a few seconds. I've lost all the channel and programming info for the time being.

This ever happen to anybody before? Should I worry? Am I not going to be able to tape Olbermann tonight? Is my box about to explode?

1. Turn it off or unplug it for a few minutes
Then turn it back on. My box does this all the time. Cable company says it is booting new software into the box. That's what makes it go off.

6. It seemed to self-unplug itself, so I guess I'm okay
I was able to change channels once it came back to life. But it just occured to me that I can't check to see if my Olbermann will be recorded tonight because I can't use the Guide yet that far ahead!

Shit, I probably lost my VCR timers. Hopefully I can reset them before I have to leave for work.

2. Sometimes when I start a program it will freeze. I always turn the
tv off, then turn it back on and wait for several minutes for everything to come back on. I still often can't watch the program, so I have to call my cable provider and they *reauthorize* my set.

3. Mine did something similar last night. Was DVRing a show and it wouldn't rewind
I would switch to other channels and just get a black screen. Powering on/off cured the problem.

4. Usually, it's no big deal.
Your digital cable box is a computer, that runs software, and occasionally, that software crashes, and your cable box needs to be rebooted, just like any computer. Also, as mentioned, sometimes the cable company will send new software to your box, which may make it stop responding while it downloads the new software, then power-cycle to start the new software.

If the box freezes or power-cycles itself too often, that might indicate that the memory on the box may be going bad, in which case, you should go to your cable company and replace your box.

5. We have that occasionally..it's only when it keeps doing it that
there is a problem. We've had to have one of ours replaced because something was wrong and it wouldn't update correctly..it just kept rebooting over and over and over.

7. Thanks. It's the first time it's happened to my knowledge...
But I have lost my VCR timers a couple of times before... hmmm... this may explain it.

12. You should be able to call, my daughter calls them instead of me.
If it were up to me, I'd tell them to come get their boxes and shove their cable, especially after sitting one day for 12 hrs waiting for them to come fix the 2nd box and they never showed up. The guy she got ahold of that night was able to direct her on how to reboot it from pushing the power button and holding it in until something appeared on the box screen. Then she released the button..not sure what she did after that.
