5. There's nothing wrong with your posts, as far as I can see...
Except it would be better to give them different subject lines because people will think that they're dupes. I did...

And welcome to DU! :toast:

19. Thanks...
My apologies for the screw up.. kinda new at this. They caused quite a stir last night, and I didn't mean to offend anyone by them, but some go quite hostile, so my polling days are over. I'll stick to Health Care... my forte':toast:

10. Don't worry. Get a few thousand posts and you can start the stupidest threads every day.
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 08:36 AM by TexasObserver
And you'll have a dozen others high fiving you and shouting your praises.

Picking on the new kid is a bad habit some here have. It's against the rules, but some members feel entitled to talk shit, for no other reason than they've been around a while.

8. NO I think about each issue, try to be objective and am not a mindless rubber stamp for anyone
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 08:31 AM by stray cat
I'm a person and not a label unlike many who can't think outside a party platform. I am not a lemming and I don't vote for lemmings who follow anyone dogma off any available cliff. I vote for people capable of independent rationale thought.

9. IMO, one can't be a liberal and still oppose gay marriage.
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 08:36 AM by TexasObserver
They can still be a Democrat, but not a liberal.

11. Exactly.
Also, per Skinner:

We have very few litmus test issues on DU...But this is a litmus test issue, because we are talking about REAL PEOPLE, our fellow members of this community. I simply will not tolerate the idea of some DU members arguing that other DU members are not deserving of full and equal rights...We expect all of our members to support equal rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation. That includes the right to marry.
A few words about the discussion of gay rights and related issues.

12. I consider standing up for gay marriage the same as standing up for interracial marriage.
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 08:44 AM by TexasObserver
I don't see our duty to support such marriages as any different.

Thanks for the Skinner quote. It has to be trotted out every few weeks to make the point here.

13. And I whole heartedly agree.
And Thanks for having patience and some understanding. I was raised in Canada, and have a tough time understanding the American political scene. I was raised under the New Democratic Party up there , which is or was considered outright socialist compared to The Democratic party, which, as you pointed out, people can be Democrats, but not exactly "liberal". I was suprised to see, for instance, that on the issue of the Sea Shepherds and their anti-whaling campaign, that almost a third of the posts were cutting down Paul Watson really bad. The NDP consists of people who are all on the same page, and there is a line drawn in the sand. That's probably why they have never held power federally up there, but the party and it's members stick to the platform. I am as passionate about whale rights as I am about Gay rights, and clear cut logging of old growth forests, and Universal Health Care, and that is 100% all the way. That's not to put whales before humans, although some here might see it that way. Being fairly new here, I was curious to see what some some of the ideology was here and try to understand this thing about being Liberal and just being a Democrat.( "Liberals" in Canada are a few degrees to the right of even Democrats down here) When I started the "poll" which I now see was stupid, I didn't know how to do it, and had them all on one post, then somebody clued me in that you can only vote on one thing if you do it that way, and told me I had to make them all separate. And due to a bit of lack of creativity on my part, one member accused me of "spamming the board" and got downright hostile. I am not used to that, but I see your point about the long-timers being a bit territorial and hard on "new comers" The irony is that I first started campaigning politically when I was 11 years old with a good understanding, thanks to my Father, about politics. That was 43 years ago. So I am not exactly "new". I thank you again for pointing things out and apologize for the ignorance of my polling skills. I will save that Skinner Quote, and pass it on to my Cousin, who is Gay, and one of my best friends.

15. Thanks for the Quote.
I could not agree more with it, and I apologize if it seemed I was trying to "litmus test" the topic. I'm a bit new to Du, and did not mean to offend anyone here. I am as passionate about Gay rights as I am about all human rights, and, coming from Canada, I find American politics a bit confusing sometimes. The intent was to further understand the cross section of the political mindset as compared to The New Democrats in Canada, who are mostly all on the same page about all issues, environment, Human rights, and Health Care. I see now that a person can vote Democrat, but be against some of the more "socialistic" ideolology that I am used to. My "polling" skills here lacked creativity, as well as understanding how to work the poll feature. After I posted them, I was attacked in a very vicious way by a member, for spamming the board. That was not my intent, but I see some people are quite protective of DU. I know that Gay rights is a touchy subject for some, but I don't see it that way. It's plain common sense to me, and a no-brainer, as well as racial issues, environment, and civil rights, and being raised with no dividing lines, I find views from the right to be alien and unfathomable. But even more confusing when the lines are hazy on the left. When My cousin "came out" and announced he was Gay, I couldn't see any difference, he was still the same person, and if anything, we became closer. I saw how the logging industry was clear cutting the old Sitka Spruce stands on Haida Gwaii, and when I watch Whale Wars, it all makes my blood boil. But, this is not a contest, just stating where I come from. I apologize for the long post, and think I'll take a break from DU and go sailing. Thanks again for the great quote, and I apologize again for the "poll"
