OK now, class, for extra credit, how many of you can identify J. William Grimes? (Yes, very good, his name was in the papers just three weeks ago.) Who can tell us who are, or were, Kyle Sampson, Monica Goodling and Michael D. Brown?
Of course you know Scooter Libby, Valerie Plame, Jack Abramoff, Duke Cunningham and Tom DeLay -- there'll be no extra credit for them, or for Bob Ney, Mark Foley or Grover Norquist either, but how about Neil Volz, Tony Rudy, Michael Scanlon, Susan Ralston, Sara Taylor, Armstrong Williams, Jeff Gannon (a.k.a. James Dale Guckert), Ralph Reed and David Safavian?

No, you in the back row, they're not all convicted crooks, or even indicted. Most are not. They're not any one thing, though some are connected, often through some third figure like Dick Cheney, Karl Rove or Alberto Gonzales. (Hint: One was the victim of a shooting.)
Also, don't forget that you'll be responsible for Katherine Harris; Ken Blackwell; Ken Lay; Jeff Skilling; Halliburton and its subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root; the K Street Project; Ahmed Chalabi; Richard Perle; Douglas Feith; Paul Wolfowitz; Abu Ghraib; John Yoo; Pat Tillman; Jennifer Lynch; "shock and awe"; "Mission Accomplished"; "rendition"; Richard S. Foster; Thomas Scully; Francis Harvey; Walter Reed; and, of course, Katrina.

• Most of the figures discussed in the course are Republicans. Would Democrats have behaved any differently if they had controlled both the White House and Congress over an extended period of time? What does history tell us? To what extent is political behavior driven by individual choice (personality, ideology, morality) and to what extent by historical circumstances? Does the cause lie in our leadership or in the electorate? Cite concrete evidence for your conclusions.
