I feel sooo proud today!!!!
I am a Puerto Rican-American woman.

I grew up in the Bronx.

I almost went to Cardinal Spellman HS.

I had always hoped to see a Hispanic appointed to the Supreme Court but I am especially proud as she is from my ethnicity and my neigborhood.

Please excuse me if this sounds weird. I am just soooo happy!

3. I went to Aquinas HS..
my older sister was there and for two of us there was a tuition discount for my parents. I really wanted to go to Cardinal Spellman because a lot of my buddies went there. I ended up really liking Aquinas and couldn't really argue with the pros of going there. Plus it was close enough to walk. I would have had to take the subway to get to Spellman.

5. indeed a great day.
not to be a debbie downer, but I bet every word Sotomayor utters will be mischaracterized and fed to the nutcases at least until they get another target.
Lord I hate those people any more.
didn't mean to rain on the parade.
let me join you in a few jumps. I live in a half Hispanic town and am currently mentoring 3 kids to enhance their chances for post secondary education.
This is yet another major barrier knocked down.

7. Not at all.
If you are Hispanic or Black you have to work twice as hard to get half as much.

Of course the Repubs will criticize her. But you know what? Hispanics vote. And we have good memories too...

20. Same things the racist whites used to say
Getting off on the greatness of others just because they share an ethnic heritage seems like the same tired line the racist whites used to use.

24. Wow...
:wow:

So I am a racist because I have a similar background as Sotomayor and I feel very proud that she has gotten this far?

You know, just as an example, I have tons of Irish friends and not only do I not think St. Patrick's Day celebrations are racist...I have enjoyed the celebrating myself many times. It's showing some ethnic pride which is a natural thing. Everyone does it.

This is a first..and many of us Hispanics and in particular Puerto Ricans really dreamed of this happening but weren't really sure it would.

The Supreme Courts is just an example of how most of what is decided in this country is decided by Whites...as it has been heavily dominated by Whites. Many of them good, many not so much as we see now.

To me racism is feeling SUPERIOR to other races.

I do not feel superior. I feel equal. But there is still not enough representation from minority groups in this country in higher offices. That's what makes this big. I guess that not being a minority which I take you aren't, makes it difficult for you to appreciate.

I will celebrate and I will not let people like you take that away from me.

If you think that my feeling pride that Sotomayor has gotten this far is akin to being a Skinhead or a Nazi (which is what real racism is about), then what can I say? There are no words I can say to that..

I hope you can do some soul searching and find out why it is that this really bothers you.

I am very grateful that most White DU'ers feel as happy as I do.

21. It doesn't sound weird...
It sounds like something you have been waiting for has finally come to you.;) We should all be happy. Judge Sotomeyer is an excellent judge with a vast body of experience. She typifies what we were always told was the American dream. Anyone can be anything in this country that they want to be. This almost never happens, but when it does it is cause for all of us to celebrate.

The fact that so many Republicans voted for her speaks volumes to me about her qualifications, her poise, her ability to think on her feet and to stand up to a ton of unnecessary abuse by people far less capable and much more ignorant than she is.

I'm happy with you. I have seen history made, and for once they did it right.:hi:

and I am soooooooooooooo happy too, for you, for me and for all Americans. I love our new supreme court justice and feel she will do what's right by our constitution. If anything is right by our constitution then it's right by us all is my way of thinking.
